When choosing the cham, pick one that doesnt have any bruises/black marks and appears alert. Do not pick one that shuts its eyes frequently or if the eyes look sunken. There are many other things to watch out for, but these are the basics.
After recieving the chameleon get a fecal check done...
LOL Its in their nature to jump... What you can do is cut the spiky part of their hind legs off to stop them from jumping. What i also find effective is that when moving them or around them, dont make sudden/fast movements but move in a slow/continuous manner. You will find that less feel scared...
I suggest you use a 40-60 watt (max) incandescent bulb if you plan on buying a juvenile veiled or any juvenile chameleon for that matter.
I also think you should read up alot before purchasing any chameleon, particularly the site below...should you get a veiled...
I think chameleons as pets, deserve an owner who isnt afraid to offer them a wide variety of insects. I am quite comfortable handling any insect.
IMO I think you should get over your fear. Do it for your lovely cham, im sure he'll appreciate it.:)
