I totally get your point and don't disagree with it. However, I'm not aware of a single commercial or hobbyist scale breeder that has consistently produced this species in a long time. They retail for $50, are not easy to raise as babies, and have relatively low numbers of offspring per year...
Of course I also agree that a cbb veiled or panther is best for a beginner; I just wrote that article saying exactly that! :D BUT, when I started keeping chameleons veileds weren't even on the market yet, Reptiles magazine didn't exist, and the CIN was just getting going. I had to learn with...
And the last time anyone saw cb sternfeldi (rudis) 3-4 months old for sale was? Just being realistic. If you do your homework on care and start out with young, healthy animals they could do just as well as cb.
Based on having kept 30 some-odd species of chameleons over the last 22 years I agree 1000% with everything Kara said but wanted to add one more thing. When you know you want to try something that is not commonly offered as captive bred/hatched, be prepared to get them as soon after they land...
Great photos. Those baby ETB's are gorgeous! I didn't even realize he had a gravid female! Super cool. Btw, that older one is a Merauke-type GTP. Oh, and get some chameleons!! ;)
Here's the way I look at it, at least for the "regional color morphs" from the mainland: I've been saying it here for five years; the term "locale" is being misused unless one collected the animals him or herself. The males' colors may conform to a certain look but don't necessarily come FROM...
I'd like to see better pics but from what I can see of her body I think she looks good, too. Chameleons will sometimes sink their eyes in response to stressors, like being held, although I'd say it's unusual for Oustalet's to do it.
The differences between the two are....small. (Tee hee) Carpets (Furcifer lateralis) has one of the largest ranges of a chameleon in Madagascar and can come from a number of climates (tropical forest, spiny desert, dry forests where the giant baobabs are, mountains, high plateau, etc. ) while...
Just a friendly reminder that this forum is not for guessing games, as the message states before you post here. There's nothing male looking to this chameleon and responses that could potentially confuse the owner aren't what we're looking for.
Thanks. :)
Ya'll know about The Chameleons of Africa, right? It's even on sale right now. ;)

Dr Boyer is excellent but my favorite cham vet in SD is Dr. Todd Cecil at the Emergency and Specialty Hospital in La Mesa on Jackson and in Chula Vista (not sure location).
Covet bought them from Outpost and, if he still has them, they are supposedly cbb. Nice pick up, Jeremy. The two males I've had both had really cool "personalities." Definitely one of my fave species.
Yep, done it several times with early and near hatching clutches without problem in panthers. There's no guarantee any egg will hatch but overnight shipping is unlikely to be the cause of a failure to do so, given it was packed properly.
Also, knock on wood, I've only dropped a couple of...
Thanks very much for taking the time to write such a detailed account of the treatment. And, of course, congratulations on the positive results and nice work!
