Sounds like your problem was just that you did not have something for the moth to climb up on. They all emerge with seemingly short wings. They need to be able to stretch their wings. I personally use screen wrapped around their container. I also use slightly damp coconut coir for them to burrow...
This is exactly what I think it is. If your hornworms are running low on food, or the cup is to crowded and one cannot reach food, they will bite and try to eat each other. This is probably just a bite mark. I would feel safe feeding it to my chameleons.
