Ooh, sorry I've not documented in the gallery -- I am completely inept at many things, including digital photography. I've also become a touch superstitious about photographing these guys -- every time I do it (to show them off to friends and relatives), one or the other mounts a hunger strike...
With great deference to more experienced keepers, I'd offer that the answer may be "it depends" on the individual chameleon. I have one guy who loves his peace and quiet and privacy, and one who is Mr. Sociability -- a real student of what goes on around him and when given the chance, right in...
Using the same logic, I've been experimenting with hummus (fully composted leaves -- soil conditioner, actually) in the enclosure. My "persnickety" one was doing everything he could to circumvent my strategies for keeping him out of the dirt in the pot. He got very good at hanging upside down...
I have had the same conversations with the manager at my PetSmart. He tells me (as do the folks at PetCo) that all their caging, displays, etc are set by corporate -- so sorry he has no discretion. My own campaign includes the argument that if the company is going to sell chameleons, then it...
Wslinky and Jordan, thanks for the site and the deconstruction -- very helpful. Will -- that's a brilliant suggestion and I'll let you know how it pans out!!
So as gut load goes, spinach is out (oxalic acid), collard is in.. I never see mention of green beans -- or any other legumes for that matter. I almost always have fresh beans in the house -- good stuff or not so good for chameleons?
Also, one of my panthers will do somersaults for steamed...
One of my 7mo. male panthers seems to have a craving for wood/bark. Can anyone suggest what he might be after/missing from his diet?
The first week I had him home I'd find him every morning hunting around in the pot of his schefflera plant, which luckily I had stuffed with paper towels...
Those ESU combination light fixtures that hold a flourescent tube and a couple of incandescent bulbs sure seem like a nice way to reduce the "stuff" on the top of the cage and also make the heat source more secure. I've searched past forum threads and found that at least a couple of people here...
Ditto, ditto. I yearn to see my little panther drink and lap with the same delight that others post of wet faces grinning through steaming ficus leaves...but that porcelain tub is a murderous place for a panicky little guy to take a spill. Someone tell us how to get from here to there???
Dave,
Thanks very much for your reply -- the best part of which is that your panther apparently pulled through. Mylanta, huh? Vet put my little guy on
.05 cc Alternagel, which also is some sort of antacid -- same principle. If ever a lizard's face could say, "this stuff if FOUL!". Poor...
My vet actually strongly recommends reptivite recisely because it does have have preformed vitamin A; says 2x/month light dusting should pose no problem. What is preferred alternative brand? I gut load with collard greens, sweet potato, a little bit of shaved carrot, and an orange slice for...
Got blood chemistry results back from the lab today and I'm beside myself...
My tale...
Had a case of writer's block, went to the pet store for dog food, came home with a Jackson's, made every mistake imaginable. Turns out I live within range of one of the best herp vets there is, and with...
I'm brand new to this forum and probably should mind my ps & qs for a while but ... I see you have him in a glass terrarium. I'll just share that I did the same thing when I bought my Jax, on the advice of a pet store employee. Within 10 days I was running up my first vet bills to treat a...
