I used nature zone cricket bites for several months, they do have lots of nutrition. However, it is cheaper just to make your own gutload by dicing some cham-safe veggies and fruits.
My A/C is kept around 72 degrees. If you can afford it, you should invest in and automatic mister (like Mistking). They will help a great deal. I mist my chameleons 3 times a day for 10 minutes each time, because it can take several minutes for a chameleon to finally begin drinking.
Compacts and mercury bulbs can in fact produce higher UV output than the sun would produce in a chameleons natural enviornment . That is why they are not recommended.
You did all that you could. It takes guts to approach someone in a situation like that. Hopefully they will look into it on their own and realize they were in the wrong.
Compacts are dangerous, yes there are instances where some people have had no problems. But those who do have problems (and quite a few do), have serious problems. So why take the risk? Zoo Med spirals are compacts and therefore dangerous. Reptiglo is better than the reptisun? I think you...
Spirals do indeed affect other animals too, there is a link on my blog post about that. Regular flourescents also allow plants to grow too, they emit the same rays as compacts, except compacts release rays in a harmful/uncontrolled manner. UV rays do not penetrate through glass, so having your...
I believe that was me, definitely avoid the compact bulbs. They can cause significant damage and even death, I have a blog post where you can read about my experiences https://www.chameleonforums.com/blogs/cushcameleon/135-compact-bulbs-big-no.html.
I think it all boils down to how much reasearch, time and care are you willing to put into it. There is no doubt that some species require more of all the above, but what makes these reptiles hard to care for is the amount of time they require from you. That being said, if you are willing to...
The more cham-nutritious fruits and veggies you can offer, the better the gutload IMO. Right now I use a mix of diced sweet potatoes, carrots, apples and oranges.
You don't really need a mister or live plants. Many of us have to take long road trips with our chams from time to time. For trips in the car, I put each chameleon into a thin cotton pillowcase and then I ziptie them closed. Then I just place each pillowcase into a large styrofoam cooler...
Are you using a UV coil bulb? If so, remove it immediately and go purchase a reptisun 5.0 fluorescent tube. You need to have UV light so either take him outside for a couple hours (if you have good weather), or go purchase a reptisun 5.0 tube from a pet store (A.S.A.P). It can take some time...
I just tried to order some medium sized silkworms from Mulberry Farms, but it says unavailable. I then clicked through all the rest of the sizes and all are unavailable. Has anyone ever come across this problem before? What's the problem?
Drainage systems are easy to setup. I say you try that out first, how is the overall health of your plant? I have a useful blog entry about how to prevent overwatering https://www.chameleonforums.com/blogs/cushcameleon/131-custom-plant-soils.html#comment235.
Why not get another chameleon? I would think that would be all of our first suggestion (at least for me anyways, being that I am OBSESSED :D) The care gets much easier as you become more experienced, it is also much cheaper to care for multiple chameleons rather than one.
They also are known as the giant green spiny chameleon. They can get up to two feet long and are one of the more hardy types of chameleons (from what I have read). I am closing in on my first month of ownership with my verru. They really are awesome chameleons and the males have very pretty...
