I share this concern; the idea of a free-range cham is appealing; the idea of free-range roaches is something that up to this point I have tried to avoid at all costs. Looking forward to the input of the experts on this topic!

We have an easy fix for that; every hour in front of XBOX, TV, computer, etc must be balanced with an hour outside and OUTSIDE time must be served first. It's easy in Florida though - nice weather takes away all the excuses to be a hermit and stay inside :)

Screen indeed will stop the larger visible feces; I wonder though about smaller particulates that might fall through the screen such as roach or cricket feces. One would need to be very vigilant but I suppose it could be done.
Might be easier to simply route the water through an EPA approved...

For the short while I had a cham I found the misting spray bottle served two purposes - the second being a kind way to scare the kitty away from the cage. I left the spray bottle in plain view and the cat kept its distance.
