this is a stained giardia trophozoit. (yours not being stained would be clear instead of purple but the distinguishing features would still be present ... shape, eye like nuclei etc.). It doesn't look like this does it?
Saline should be more isotonic ... so if you're looking for a protozoan, you would maybe be more likely to find them intact. ALthough using saturated sugar isn't a good way to find protozoans, as the osmotic balance can be disrupted and destroy them. we recommend zinc sulfate solutions, but they...
To the best of my knowledge (I work for a veterinary parasitologist, although reptile parasites aren't my fortee...) this doesn't sound like a parasite. I think you very well could be seeing yeast or bacteria at 400X. Your description (without the magnification) could make it out to be giardia...
I've had to forcefeed hermie many times. A 1cc syringe (no needle) worked well with baby food. Additionally popping a cricket or worm in his mouth when he hissed (or I very gently pried it open worked well also).
If her eyes are sunken in she might be dehydrated ... consider a shower. Also...
yes ponazuril and baytril both require Rxs. (unless you can find them on the black market ... yes one does exist).
Ponazuril has been shown to be effective when given with food in horses (some other anti-protozoal drugs require an empty stomach)
Jamie
Ponazuril (bayer trade name Marquis) was originally developed for an equine parasitic disease (caused by a protozoan, Sarcocystis neurona) that affects the central nervous system (the disease is referred to as equine protozoal myeloencephalitis or EPM). Baytril is the "canadian" version although...
Good luck with your little guy! I had a situation very similar to yours with my cham hermie ... developed severe MBD with no reason that my vets could figure out. Someone suggested to me that I was feeding him too much and he was growing quicker than his bones could keep up with, even with...
Trust me, you can develop MBD even with a UVB bulb. I would get this cham to a vet asap so that you can hopefully get him turned around... otherwise she's not headed towards a good outcome.
Hermie used to work his way out of his cage on a daily basis. I used to PANIC like crazy because I couldn't find him ... would tare my apartment apart looking for him (and then worry that I was inadvertently trapping him some place...). So finally I just decided to stop frantic looking but ...
If she were larger (say dog or cat) they could go in to do surgery and find what's bleeding and stop it. But on a cham ... I would think that if she is having problems breathing they could try and support her with oxygen in an oxygen cage, they could take an xray/ultrasound to see if they can...
If you can get her to a knowledgeable vet GO. I don't know how advanced cham medicine is but it sounds like she is suffering from internal injuries and could be bleeding internally.
While I don't take photos that are as stunning as most of yours I did want to share a new picture of Hermie, my veiled, who I posted about in the health forum who had the kidney infection, MBD, etc. Here's a recent shot of him enjoying life again, in his bush in my window enjoying some of the...
I was just wondering if there is a general rule of thumb for how long you guys leave your chams in the shower? Hermie (my approx 3 yo veiled) is in there on his plant right now and drinking up a storm (he used to hate showers so I always hand misted him, which he hated as well actually) ... I'm...
Those are interesting articles!
hermie usually does his vibrations right before he gets his subq injections ... :( so I've always taken it as a "Leave me allllooonnnneeee!" plea.
Jam
These vibrations are something that they do when they are threatened and feel intimidated ... it's a defense technique.
If your veiled is a male it should have a little spur (think extra toe without a nail) on the backs of his feet. I'm sure that someone has a picture of one.
Jamie
THere have been two cases where I have bought animals out of petstores that were obviously going to die or were being mistreated
In one case a worker I was familiar with (it's the only place I could buy decent feeders at in the area so they saw me regularly) pulled me aside and explained the...
With Hermie my vet told me to make a quality of life checklist. And the main one on his is when he stops eating for an extended period, it's time. He does go on hunger strikes occasionally but we can bring that around with new foods. I was worried a while ago that Herm was suffering and it may...
