Just use vermiculite. I've had the best results using it.

Look for a used entry level digital SLR like a Canon XTi or Nikon D40. Look for a standard kit too. Something with the charger, USB, 18-55 lens. You should be able to puck that up for around 400$ not to mention it will blow any point and shoot out of the water.
