I have held many snakes, a couple over 20ft long and never had a problem with it trying to strangle me or anyone else.

Id buy it. $40 for a chameleon even if its sick isn't that bad and you'd be saving it. Id also print off for a bunch of different sites chameleon care and leave it for them. They may just throw it out but you at least did your part. Look into reporting them for abuse or neglect. The pet stores...
