A lot of times, if not all, when a chameleon behaves in this way it is not dominance nor aggression, but defensiveness. Chameleons are prey creatures and as far as he knows, you are a predator. A hand can seem like a bird's claw lifting him to his doom. So, naturally, it will be his instinct...
Carpet chameleons are small. So are Pygmys. But honestly, there are more expenses to a cham than just the cage. If your friend can't afford a large cage, how will he be able to afford other things, like food lighting, ect...? Also most chameleons can change color, just not in the way a lot...
Albert's colors in the photo you provided don't stand out to me to indicate stress, at least not large amounts of it. ThE fact that he is near the bottom leads me to believe that he too hot in his cage. Switching the basking light will rectify this. Basking temperatures should be around 90...
From your description, it sounds to me like something is causing him stress. It could simply be from being caged up (chameleons, particularly Veileds don't like to be confined. You might want to consider setting up a free range) or there could be some other underlying factor. It would help if...

I don't mean to veer off topic, but are you absolutely sure that Max is a male? From looking at the photos on your album, I think "he" might be a girl. Does he have tarsals spurs on the back of back feet? If not, then you might have a female already. I might be wrong, just thought I'd...
Yes. All lights should be turned off at night. Chameleons can only sleep in absolute darkness. Chameleons do not even need night lamps at night, as they can tolerate temperature drops below 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
That's definitely a burn. From the photos, I can tell that you have the basking light inside the cage. You need to get that bulb out of the cage ASAP! All lights should be above the cage. I recommend a vet visit.
I agree with Andee, and I have a Veiled. The supplementing schedule, as well as the feeding is the same for both Veileds and Panthers. I mean no offense to your friend, but he might not be as much of as en expert as he thinks. You should take a look at the Veiled chameleon care sheet provided...
First off, any chameleon can be "aggressive", whether it's Veiled or Panther, male or female. Each individual chameleon has it's own unique personality. Unfortunately, Veiled are often stereotyped as mean (technically defensive), and I'm sure this is true of some, but not every single one...
I had this same problem a little while ago. Fortunately, I caught a thin window of time when Mulberry Farms did have some available. I would recommend emailing Mullberry Farms to ask them when they will be having some available. That is what I did. If not, you could just wait it out. Or buy...
My guess is that she turned dark from stress. Shedding is a very upsetting and uncomfortable process for chameleons. I mean, imagine if your entire body just started flaking. Plus, if you were watching her for an extended period of time, that may have contributed as well. It helps to give...
Female chameleons can lay infertile eggs without ever being exposed to a male. IMO (not an expert) she looks a little round to me and might possibly look like she is gravid. Like other people mentioned, being egg bound may have contributed. It may not have, but it is worth looking into. It...
I am so sorry at you lost the poor guy. :( If it makes you feel any better, I honestly doubt that he passed from anything you did in that short amount of time, unless, like you said, he choked. Unfortunately, many chameleons sold at shows are first off often wild caught and not in good...
