If the substrate surface layer contains larger pieces (chips, bark, shredded cocoa, etc) it is possible. Not that the cham will be intentionally EATING the material (some chams will sample and chew on anything) but that they can get pieces stuck to their tongues when shooting at something else...
Rocking and swaying are part of a threat display. Some chams do it more than others. He's probably reminding you he's a big tough man. If he were to get more upset you'd see his display escalate with color change, puffing himself up, coiling or lashing his tail, gaping, pushing out his throat, etc.
That's a big airspace to keep humidified and there's almost nothing inside to trap and hold what moisture/droplets you do put into it. A lot more living foliage will make a big difference and be a lot more comfortable for your cham too. The potting soil as well as the leaves will trap and...
Because most stores have no clue about D3 supplementation at all, particularly for chameleons. They may not even realize the difference in the products they ordered from their whole supplier.
IMHO, this spot may well be a thermal burn. They can take a while to show, and often there will be a...
Miracle of miracles...a tried and true husbandry standard demonstrates once again why it earned that reputation. No offense intended to the excellent Arcadias; a relatively recent improvement on the classic standby.
THIS!
While it can be interesting to read everyone's anecdotes about what they do, it is important to remember that one person's routine in their home and locale isn't necessarily going to be attainable or appropriate for someone else in a different situation. One size does not fit all...never...
Thank you all.
Bug did not improve at all overnight. We decided to give the steroids 24 hours to work...if the paralysis was due to a herniated disc there should have been some response by then. Treatment had no effect and she needed higher doses of pain control by morning. There was no way I...
My 9 year old rescue cattledog Bug is at the vet, having been heavily sedated most of the day. She sleeps on my bed and her trembling and crying woke me out of a dead sleep at about 4 am. She had had her annual dental cleaning and a tiny growth removed from her face last Thursday, but also had a...
Before you pay anything for a sick cham I'd look it over carefully in person, maybe even having a vet look at it. Check for obvious things like intestinal or hemipene prolapses, swollen or crusted eyes, blocked nares, sores in its mouth, swollen or damaged claws/feet, crooked limbs (MBD), etc...
When you say "humidity is perfect" what does that mean? A picture of her would help. If she's getting adequate water when you don't happen to be watching, she's stable, and her cage humidity is good you may not see her drink all that much. If you post some pictures we could see whether anything...
I can only report my observations from the chams I've kept, but back in the days when there were no "pre-fab" terrarium foggers available I experimented with a pretty simple 2 gallon room ultrasonic with auxiliary fan. It was sheer necessity, living at 9000 ft elevation in the Rockies. I had 3...
I've never seen a male veiled with that large a belly. He's not just overweight (his limbs and casque don't appear fat). I would be taking this boy to a vet. An ultrasound or xray might tell a lot.
When I read this my impression is this:
Petr Necas is entitled to his opinion as all of us are. If he is basing these recommendations (and that is what they are, not Gospel) on biological data that that he has observed in the wild, they should fairly be open to speculation and skepticism...
Oh, dear innocent newbie you ain't seen NOTHIN' yet! :wideyed:
How about a huge dubia roach colony way overdue for culling that fell off the shelf while I was at work so the little beasts had 8 hours to disperse themselves? Probably thousands. Why did it fall off? My theory was the roaches...
Depends on the tap water. If the water source is treated with fluorine or chloramines that can be a potential problem for a cham. You'd want to neutralize the chloramine with a water conditioner like ReptiSafe. If the water source isn't treated with chloramine, you may not need it. Plain old...
There is more to hydration than drinking. Its fine to get him to drink from the nozzle directly. I like teaching my chams to do this because I get a better idea of how reliably they are drinking if I'm right there watching it. Misting the enclosure helps provide them with a humid...
What components of the system do you have now? Maybe start off listing what you DO have on hand already. FWIW, by the time you assemble everything from scratch you might not save all that much compared to buying something reliable like a Mist King, especially if you only need to mist one or two...
I've hardly ever seen chams offered for sale up here, but just the other day was surprised to see two juvenile veileds at a mom-pop pet shop/feed store/nursery. Of course they weren't set up very well, but they did have UV lighting and didn't look terrible...yet. Yes, a CF coil type bulb...
I can't recall ever immersing any cham in water. I only recall putting one newly arrived miserably dehydrated rescue in my shower, but part of the reason for it was to provide a moist, quiet warm place for it to chill while I frantically assembled a makeshift enclosure. I had a fake potted Ficus...
