I just wanted to chime in on the Petco situation. I am one of those people who say it depends on location. I have two very close to us. One is horrible. Feeders are always out or dead, animals are not well kept and vailed chameleons there are 100% in horrible condition. They had a dish with...
They will eat pretty much any vegetable that I've put in there, but it gets messy and fast. Lettuce, apples. The best thing to do is to buy extra chow.
I am going to throw this out there... We know reptiles need to warm up to digest food. I realize he's not directly under his basking light, but could he be trying to raise his temps to aid digestion given his large meal?
It's only a theory and I would certainly defer to someone with more...
No meter yet, but that is also a concern I have. I am thinking about supplementing it Just in case with a T5 for now. Will let you know when I can take some measurements.
Well, the Zoo Med fixture arrived. It's currently resting directly on the top screen with the basking spot about 8" below. I am still working out options for mounting it above the screen. The ballast is built into the top of the fixture. It's a very nice unit. The bulb is noticeably brighter and...
I am literally sitting here watching our precious little tree dragon standing on top of a dish filled with collared greens, apple and strawberry while eating a live plant growing next to it... I think they do this on purpose
I feed Dubia sliced oranges as well. They seem to eat them readily. Our vailed will not eat them anymore. Zero interest, but thankfully our baby beardie loves them.
Offer him some greens and gut load your feeders really well. That's what worked in my case. Except, he lost interest in greens pretty quickly as he grew. He'll eat some from time to time. He'll also nibble on live plants from time to time as well.
I'll give you as many details on both fixtures as I can. I think one of my clients makes UVB meters, so I'll see if I can get a sample before I go buy one. If so, I'll get some readings for us as well.
Thank you for the info. I am going to get a meter. What you said about it being a narrow beam was something that I have been thinking about as well. The Zoo Med disperses the light in a wider area, although it's still a flood light. This is partly why I ordered both. One will end up with the...
Good question. In short, I think it will provide the best light available.
I have read up quite a bit on the subject and, according to several sources, metal halide offers by far the most "natural" light one can achieve artificially. Many report changes in their animals' behavior, growth and...
Thank you!!!
That is basically the plan. The "basking spot" is about 12" from the top of the enclosure and I plan on suspending the light about 3-6" above the cage. I was honestly more concerned about there not being enough heat, so that is good news.
I decided to try a metal halide setup for our vailed chameleon. There are two products I'll try. I'll keep both as we have a bearded dragon as well. First one is the Zoo Med PowerSun H.I.D. 70W system and the second one is the Exo Terra Sun Ray 50W. Both look pretty good. The mid section of the...
