Yeah, I got the idea from another forum member (unfortunately I can't remember who...:o). But for some reason he always would hide when misting. Now he hides for the first, but then comes out after it stops, and when the second starts, he stays out, drinks, cleans out his eyes, etc. Not sure why...
Currently I have mine set to go at 7:30am for 10 minutes, 1pm for 7 minutes, and at 5pm for 10 minutes. And before each of those I have it set to go on for 1 minute, off for a minute, and then the longer period. For some reason this causes my cham to drink more (don't ask why ). The...
I think what I'm planning is probably very similar to what you're doing as well. Unfortunately I have not seen true dimmable T5HO fixtures for our purposes (they probably exist but are also probably quite expensive!). I'm looking at having a fixture made which will allow each of the four bulbs...
Well the fixture I'm looking at is about 10" wide (front to back), so that still leaves 14" for the basking light, so I'm thinking I would still be good there. Also, thanks for the clarification on the 6% vs. 12%! :)
Okay. Thanks for the advice on 6%. I couldn't decide, but I'm assuming that due to the increased transmission and consistency of Arcadia T5HO's, 6% is adequate? If that's the case, then 6% it is :).
I do currently have, and plan to continue having, a heavily planted enclosure. I feel the...
Well one thing to remember also, is that many times sunlight is filtered by the atmosphere, clouds, dust, etc. etc. If you were to spend several hours near the equator on a crystal clear day, it wouldn't be too long before you started to be burnt by the sun's rays. I think a similar effect...
I'm not sure on the answer to that, but I think the larger factor at work is just economies of scale. Much much more non-UVB bulbs are produced, which enables manufacturers to produce and sell at a lower price point due to the higher volume.
It is similar to being in a tanning bed all day. UVB and UVA rays are what are emitted by the sun (obviously) and are what burn us, and can lead to skin cancer after long exposure. Of course the levels emitted from most lights used in the chameleon enclosure are relatively small. But this is...
Also, make sure you have a way of drilling the proper sized hole for the bulkhead into whatever bucket/container you used. You will probably need to purchase a bit, as most standard drill sets don't go large enough. And you do want a perfectly round hole or you may get leaks. As far as...
Also make sure you have good plans for a drainage system. You'll be surprised at the amount of water you will go through with this sort of system. Take a look at the sticky at the top of this forum that has drainage ideas. (Disregard this post if you already have drainage :D)
Hi everyone,
When I move Abe to his adult 2x2x4 enclosure, I will need to upgrade his lighting fixtures as well. I know I will be moving to T5HO lighting, as I have had great success with it with my planted aquariums, and I believe the plants in Abe's enclosure would love it as well.
I'm...
Check out SandraChameleon's blog posts. You can and should be feeding roaches the same healthy gutloading ingredients you would feed most all other feeders. Definitely avoid fish food - it has the incorrect type of Vitamin A, and other ingredients that are not healthy or wanted for our chams. I...
I have never had any problems with Super's mouths biting my chams. In fact they've never bitten me, and I've hand fed them for years. This is not to say it does not happen, but I think overall it is a low-risk. I wouldn't bother crushing the heads.
Also known around these parts as the "Sunny D Death Trap" :D. This works well in "full size" (i.e. 2x2x4') enclosures. If you need something smaller, you can sometimes find Sunny D in a smaller bottle, or use a 1 gallon or 1/2 gallon milk jug, depending on the size you need. But the basic...
