Donnie was not eating enough for my sister, even with medium grasshoppers on the menu! But… she didn’t know the oldest trick in the book. Offer a hornworm, and quickly sneak a dubia in its place at the last minute! I’ve been giving him a hornworm and 2-3 medium dubia daily. A wild, large...
I swear I am not trying to be dramatic here… this experience has been a serious roller coaster, with ups and downs coming in rapid succession.
I flew home today and all I could think about for the last 24hrs was seeing Donnie (and of course all my other babies)! I envisioned us running to each...
I’m away for another week yet, and Donnie is unfortunately declining. He is eating and drinking well, but once again looks sickly and is weak. His butt is improving but still healing. I am afraid I may lose him while I’m away. He has warmed up to my sister but I am sure he is wondering where...
Good news post checkup - Dr. Gold feels that Donnie is healing nicely, no sign of infection. The tissue I was concerned about, of course, disappeared overnight before the vet visit. The puss-y side of his vent is apparently normal for such a large, exposed wound. Ointment continues for...
I’ve noticed, for the occasional escapee in bio enclosures - if I put a small deli cup with a small dubia in it, and leave it, the escape will eventually end up in the cup, too. Has happened a few times - they somehow seek each other out.
Donnie’s back up to 170g, which is about where he was pre-surgery. We aren’t out of the woods, though. While his vent is improving, it def looks infected with a piece of tissue sticking out. Exactly like last year. We have an appt in 2 days with the vet, and I’m sure we will be back on oral...
I do the same thing with BSFL, and the isopods don’t seem to
bother them. You can definitely add them to your potted plants. I have had them living in a pot covered with 1/2” stones, as well as bare soil… but they do best with “leaf litter,” which they will also eat.
Yep - I throw them in and leave them until eaten, which is usually by the next day. The silkworm chow dries out pretty quickly and it will just fall off the branch. If you have isopods and/or springtails in your plants / soil, they will happily clean it up. Isopods are great additions to any...
Thank you Jann! The crew would be lucky to have you! Thankfully, my sister is going to stay at my house to take care of Donnie and the crew. My dog is very old and in his final months and having mobility issues, along with Donnie’s needs - she will have her hands full! But she is capable and...
We have an appt with Dr Gold on Tuesday (4 days) before I leave for 2 weeks. Donnie is improving and his vent is slowly but surely healing, but this is going almost exactly like 1 year ago in that one corner of his vent looks like it may be infected, and the other side has what I assume is a...
Charlie (veiled) has had it mostly for life, and I believe his is something internal (he has also been a gaper since birth, but no RI or visual defects). He is about to turn 5 and otherwise happy/healthy as a clam. No issues, regular check ups. No URIs. Just something out of whack...
