I have questions about all of that. What is the food? Is it a product like the orange cubes that will keep the crickets alive but not healthy/nutritious? What is the calcium product and how are the crickets getting it?
yes, they look almost like yellow round cheeto puffs 😂 the calcium and...
Yeah that is certainly the dark side of the hobby.
I actually work at a mini zoo aquarium, so see first hand the care that goes into at least BIAZA registered captive animals in everything from diet to enrichment thought through and delivered.
Yes flying prey items are great enrichment for them. I also get the same aggressive feeding response with wild prey I catch, like grasshoppers and cicadas.
By free ranging I mean the breeder is putting the crickets on his plant and letting him eat them as they climb up. But they have him in a smaller enclosure.
I don't want to do that because I want to make sure he's eating everything. I want to be able to know how many of each bug he's eating...
So the infared heat bulb you want to replace with a regular incandescent white bulb. The red bulb is bad for their eyes. I personally would get dome fixture for this and remove the big piece you have on top so you have air circulating out the top completely.
Were you advised to use a UVB bulb...
...works, what I do know is my chameleon as I’m sure all do, loves to have flying insects or winged insects and I would love to give him that enrichment and variety. What are some ways you guys keep them to have successful pupation? Just looking for some methods that have worked for any of my...
The problem is container size. I always move them right away from the small shipping cup to the tallest deli cup, filled with coconut coir. It can be completely dry, just put in some ends of squash/any kind of pepper, which they will eat to obtain moisture. You can put about 50 at a time in...
If you want to add enrichment add flying feeders or a new free range. I agree with Klyde, most of what we would consider enrichment is anthropomorphism.
...pain in the butt, but the mantids hatch, munch on the gnats or white flies for a few days before becoming a snack for the Chameleon. It’s also a great enrichment for the Chameleon! When one or two mantis escape… I don’t mind because they’ll chill on my house plants and continue to do the good...
...add live plants. https://chameleonacademy.com/plants/ Adding live plants will also help to take care of excess water drainage and will add some great enrichment for your handsome guy.
I hope I’ve been of some help. If we can help in any other way, just ask. Sending healing vibes for your guy. 💗
...my insects ( for my 4.5 month old panther bso I keep track of how much he eats but also free range some locusts and what I mentioned for enrichment. My boy has eaten around 20 insects today from feeder half in the morning the other half in the afternoon, between my 2 feeder cup/ runs , so...
Yeah they're free ranging our boy right now haha but he's in a smaller enclosure of course. I won't be doing that because I want to keep track of what he's eating as good as I can. I ended up buying the feeder from their site that @Beman suggested! Side note: I still need to find a smaller...
Yes! It's such a great form of enrichment. The flies that get out in the house tend to come back towards the UVB light and my chameleon tries to catch them but they're outside the cage. 🥺 I guess in the wild there are going to be times when they don't catch their prey but it makes me sad hahaha
He’s a handsome fella and looks very comfortable, my plan was to go With a branch and plant overload and utilise all the available space I have, apart from the top 8 “ I plan to keep free, I love the idea with the perch and may have to borrow it, I like making things that I feel will enrich my...
...HARDY and live forever, I swear, and they can't fly, climb well, or bite). I also do BSFL (or the flies themselves for some hunting enrichment when I forget I have a bunch of them and they all gestate overnight and suddenly I have a container full of flies >_>) and my cham really loves both...
...now. Great for reptiles, amphibians, mantids, birds, fish, hedgehogs, sugar gliders, and any other insect-eating animal! Can even be a fun enrichment treat for rodents like hamsters, mice, and rats.
Superworms (Zophobas morio) are juicer, more nutritious, have better calcium to phosphorous...
...her her favorite bugs to build trust and/or take her outside (to an outdoor cage or on your hand- beware of predators, they act quick) for enrichment and as a reward. I’ve attached a great blog entry on how to build trust below!
Feeding - I'm feeding her crickets, horn worms, and super worms...
...a large potted tree and enclosed it with a large butterfly cage. And others like @crosscutts build beautiful large mobile enclosures. It‘s true enrichment for them, however I get that feeling that the Jackson doesn’t like that endless blue sky and that’s the reason he goes after 30’ back inside.
