    Escapee advice

Wow, that was a lucky break! Lesson learned: never, never, NEVER take your eyes off a cham placed on an outdoor plant! NEVER! Their whole approach to life is to be sneaky and disappear. They can move faster than we expect when they want to and be gone in a flash. Chances are, your chams had...

Fan Air Duct for Glass Enclosure

I gave some excess adult Dubias to a pet shop for store credit. It took a while for local area lizard keepers to get past the "But it's a ROACH!" cringe factor, but once they did, the store had no problem selling them. Most went to friends who kept backyard chickens or ducks. To help prevent...

Fan Air Duct for Glass Enclosure

Even if I were to set up my own feeder colonies that still doesn't take care of the vet support problem. I can't breed one of THOSE when I need one! :p Even if the vet could consult with a cham-savvy vet in the south 48 they may not have the meds or technical expertise necessary. Trying to keep...

Fan Air Duct for Glass Enclosure

I've only kept one cham since moving to AK (one CBB K. fischeri) but no longer have any. Getting a decent variety of live feeders is next to impossible and vet support is next to nothing. Lost the fischeri to an infection I would have had to fly him to Seattle to treat. No way I'm going to take...

Fan Air Duct for Glass Enclosure

Agree. A fan sitting on the cage top blowing across the cage will create a chimney effect that will circulate the cage air. The fan's flow will pull warmer air out of the upper portions of the cage. Cooler air from the lower areas of the cage will rise to replace it. That's what you want. I'm...

    My Guy is in Trouble

IMHO as a 2 year old, he was quite lean before you started feeding the flies. Look at the before photos showing his casque. It was concave, not full. Something was probably going on already. Be careful. Hoping to pin the "blame" on a new feeder is easy, but it's also simplistic...low hanging...

    vets near Boca? Semi urgent

Agree. IMHO, a prolapse due to lack of UV seems a stretch.

My healthy chameleon died in boarding

Without a necropsy the cause of death (and by extension who if anyone might have contributed to it) will remain a mystery. Sorry you lost him OP.

    vets near Boca? Semi urgent

A 10.0? Danger Will Robinson! What brand of "10.0" do you mean? I'd be reviewing the Lighting article here carefully before choosing one. Daily exposure to the recommended Arcadia or ReptiSun should provide plenty of UV. The wrong UV bulb can burn!

    vets near Boca? Semi urgent

This doesn't just happen to chams. I'd be searching for any vet who sees herps. In the mean time, push hydration and keep things moist! It might be enough it retracts by itself.

    Yellow lip

Not to mention focus! If I was a bug seeing that heading in my direction, I wouldn't be sticking around long!

Panther Chameleon Something Stuck in Eye

You could aim the nozzle of a sterile saline bottle at the eye (preservative-free contact lens rinse solution) and squirt/drip the solution at the eye opening. Saline will sting less than plain water so he may not squeeze the eyelid shut to avoid it as quickly. Might get a bit more solution...

Puzzled Vet Student - Tongue Issues?

Just a couple of thoughts: IMLE, dehydration tends to make the tongue less sticky, not more. The glands on the tip of the tongue may produce less mucous if the cham is dehydrated. OTOH, if he has a history of MBD it's possible the muscle tone/structure of his tongue has been compromised, which...

    This a UVB burn?

Can't be certain either, but IME with thermal burns, the part of the cham that's closest to the radiation source tends to be the first to show damage. That would be the crest of his casque and their dorsal spines. They look fine. I agree something seems to be going on with that discolored skin...

first fall, what do i do?

Seem to recall either an African or Malagasy folk legend falling chameleons. Gravid females would let themselves fall out of tall trees, burst open when they hit the ground, releasing their babies. It seemed to be associated with the belief that because chameleons couldn't be killed, they made...

first fall, what do i do?

Inside a cage? Unless he was really, really unlucky to fall exactly wrong, a 3-4 foot fall is nothing. If he isn't moving around, eating or drinking by tomorrow I'd start to pay closer attention.

first fall, what do i do?

How old is he? How far did he fall and on to what? A healthy cham can withstand quite a fall better than we expect. If they have enough time, they will inflate themselves with air that helps cushion the impact. If he did injure himself he would most likely stop moving around, may favor a leg...

    Quality of Life

How far did she fall? A cham can fall a lot farther than we think and survive unhurt. A fall in the typical captive cham setup usually isn't a problem. Has she ever produced any clutches of infertile eggs? Her abdomen looks very "full", maybe full of eggs she can't expel. That could have led to...

    screen climbing in new enclosure

If there's an area of the cage he can't get to but wants to get to he may continue to climb the screen. Maybe he wants to roam a larger area or get higher up than he can now...chams tend to feel more secure the higher they can get. I understand you don't want him getting too close to a heat spot...
