Panther, I say this only because he ate all the bark off all branches. I understand that Vails eat plant matter on a general bases and Panthers don't but just saying Herbie had no issues eating the Butterfly bush

I have had a butterfly bush branches in my Cham cage. Herbie would eat the bark when he was young with no ill effects.

Hope everything goes well! Make sure to take care of bite with triple antibiotic. You mentioned that your guy has hookworm, reptiles can carry other forms of organisms in their mouth that can lead to infections.
