I'd be careful about letting him eat whenever he wants. You have to be really careful with the growth rate on mellers. If they grow too quickly, it can lead to a lot of problems down the road.

The reservoir is whatever you make it. It isn't something that is included in the kit. I used a Rubbermaid three drawer storage container. The top drawer is where my drain goes to. The middle drawer is my fresh water source. The bottom drawer is where my pump is housed.
