Killer almonds??!!

I had a big bag of those Blue Diamond sliced almonds not being used, so I tossed them in the food processor are chopped them up fine.
Then I dumped a few soonfulls in the dubia bin.
Next day I look in the bin and find a few dozzen dead dubia, baby ones, nymphs, and adults, just dead!!
So, after removing the dead ones, I cleaned the roach bin as best I could.
No problems since.

So, how could plain almonds kill dubia roaches, since this seems to be the most likely cause of the dead ones, I did nothing else, so what else could it have been??

Has anyone had a simaler experience?

hey - I just noticed you changed your profile pic- lol - they grey bunny is cute, but I like the physio bunny ( now that it no longer gives me nightmares - LOL

I have no idea about the almonds

Ive only had death by coconut. I wouldnt think almonds would do it unless they were wasabi lime or something :p

I put almonds along with other nuts in my dry gutload without issue. I also put dried raw coconut and other dried fruits and seeds. I'm not sure why they died, maybe something was wrong w those nuts.

Almonds are usually pasteurized with either a steam treatment or fumigation with toxic propylene oxide (PPO) gas. PPO is a jet fuel additive, a chemical so nasty that it was banned by both the National Hot Rod and American Motorcycle Racing Associations.

From wikipedia:

The United States Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of propylene oxide to pasteurize raw almonds beginning on September 1, 2007 in response to two incidents of contamination by Salmonella in commercial orchards, one incident occurring in Canada, and one incident in the United States. Pistachio nuts can also be subjected to propylene oxide to control Salmonella. It is a method approved by the FDA.[6][7]

Propylene oxide is a probable human carcinogen,[8] and listed as an IARC Group 2B carcinogen.

Great.........One more thing for me to worry about. Our food supply is a mess.

Thanks for the info! I officially will be boycotting almonds and pistachios from now on...do they do this with cashews as well? I HOPE NOT!!

Agreed. I started learning about this stuff about ten years ago when I started having the typical health decline that all my friends in their 40's suffer from. The more I learned and applied to my diet, the better I felt. My physiological aging seemed to reverse. I now feel better than when I was in my 20's, and my brain works better than back then too. After 15 years of sleep apnea and insomnia, I now sleep like a rock.

Sure, it is expensive to eat all organic, but still cheaper than medical bills. I haven't even had the common cold in over eight years, and my twice weekly migraines stopped after about a month of eating healthy. I work around young people that are sick all of the time. I run circles around them.

Food matters. If you are feeding your insects and chameleons better than what you eat, it may be time to reassess your priorities.

I totally agree. We started eating all organic and researching our food more thuroughly a few months ago when we decided to start trying for a baby. The first thing I noticed was that my multiple times a week headaches and weekly migraines went away. There is definitely a huge difference. I feel much better and have more energy.

After rereading the gutload caresheet on this site last week at the pool, I went immediately afterwards to walmart. I decided to add some things. Especially wanted to add the organic non-salted almonds and sunflower seeds. I looked up and down the nut section. Nothing had 'organic non-salted' printed on the bag. Needless to say, I didn't buy. Luck of the draw, I guess. This example is the reason, if it implies organic or non-salted, I won't buy. Only will I buy, if it specifically says it in bold print. Sorry for the dead feeders. Maybe wait a week or two before feeding any of them to a cham. Let whatever it may have been, pass thru system.

Walmart is not known for healthy food. Just look at their typical customer. Whole Foods or Natural Grocers would be a better bet to get what you need in bulk.

I figured as much. Sometimes you get lucky. Where I am, I have to travel 60 miles to a reputable organic store. Not even sure if it is still there. We are dominated by a heavy navy presence here, so organic stores aren't a priority. We are all 7-11s, nightclubs, fast food and car dealerships. Hey, wait a minute I am a typical customer. I boycotted walmart and sams club from 1989-2000 because the founder was supposed communist supporter (so the local rumors). But being a single parent, who is disabled, forced me to shop where I could afford to. Why do think I breed the chams. To get my son swimming lessons, better education, nice clothes, etc... Never thought doing what is necessary to be a good parent would gain me criticism. Huh?:(

What about the raw ones??

Do they ruin those too
Better off just to pm sandra, and ask for specifics. Her inbox was accepting new pms the other day, so she must have made room. She got back to me within a couple hours. Let me know what you learn, please. I am right there with you on the almonds, sunflower, and flax seeds. ????

LOL! Have no fear, bunny is in semi-retirement and I am saving him for special occasions.
So when you see him again, it's a sign something is going to HAPPEN :D

And now, back to our regularly scheduled thread, which is already in progress.........

The nuts I use are raw nuts from either sun harvest or whole foods bulk bins. I always look for organic and raw ingredients.

Not criticizing, Walmart's target market is not the health conscious individual, that is why you are hard pressed to find any food that is not processed and full of junk. The fact that you are looking for organics means that you are not their typical customer. Their typical customer doesn't give a hoot about that.;)
