Anyone out there using these as a feeder???
I just got some they are an amazing Lime green colour!!
Will keep posted on how the breeding of them goes:)

I love katydids!! (well, haven't tried them personally, but .... :)) They are just like mini mantids!

They come out in the early-mid fall here and my cats used to catch them outside and bring them into the house and play with them. :p It never dawned on me to use them as feeders.... hhhmmmm. I am curious as well.

Treelions: did you get these as a farm raised feeder?

Hello,

Yes i just got them, from a guy that keeps panthers also,he has been breeding them for awhile.
I have 17 to start with:)They are feeding well on buddleia, and i can find the plant growing everywhere,so its great!
There grow to about 4 inches apparently.
The hind legs are a bit sharp on the adults but i'll snip them off before feeding

Mine are the Giant Florida katydid,so maybe you can use them too:D

i do recall catching some of these when i was younger. but i hardly see them here anymore, one day ill have to look for some.

They breed on their own, just provide a warm humid place with lots of bramble, rose, or bouganvilia, with the occasional fruits and they will breed, the eggs take about 40 days to hatch. I now have a small colony.

I will post one tommorow, Its just an XL (well a few ) cricket keeper with paper towel substate and paper towel under the lid (hard to explain) and two cups with covers that have two holes so I can put the host plant clippings in the water.

are they slow breeders?? i know it takes about 40 days to hatch but do they lay their eggs often and how fast do they grow

i am sorry for all the questions, I never had a cham but when i get a job i want to make sure everything is perfect and make sure i know as much as I can (I have been planning for 2 years!!) before i bring one home

welll, in short yes, they are pretty cool though I just think of them as a pet that gets fed to my chams from time to time, their life cycle is only 6 months, so its slow but not painfully slow. they will also lay more than one clutch in their life, PM me if you have any other questions.

if the sound of sandpaper rubbing against each other is loud to you than yes :D I keep mine outside but I have heard them.

Thats why Im here :)

EDIT: One good thing about them is while at night they are like little banshees hopping and flying and eating and chirping and mating etc during the day they are lethargic and easy to get out for chams to eat.
