I am planning on getting some colonies of fruit flies started up and I was wondering where to get some aspen excelsior at stores. Also if anyone know where I can buy some media at stores or a good, easy to get a hold of supplies, homemade media that would be appreciated. Thanks

;)excelcizor can sometimes be found at craft stores like micheal's, but you will probably have to look in person cause i dont think they call it excelcizor. you can also use stuff in place of excelcizor, like; cut strips of 1/8-1/4" mesh plastic screen, cut in half bamboo skewers, or crumpled coffee filters. fruitfly media recipies can be found everywhere and some work better than others, here is a list of media recipies, http://www.anapsid.org/fruitfly.html , you could also try the harvey peterson medium. i have tried most of the recipies out there and my favorite is one of the simplest, 8 parts potatoe flakes, 1 brewers yeast, 1 powdered sugar, and enough water / slash vinegar/ orange juice to get it to the right consistancy.after this mixture has set in the containers and cooled it is topped with a 1/16" slurry 1 part powdered sugar, 1 part active dry yeast, and enough water to make it a little thicker than maple syrup. most homade recipies (including this one) will mold without the use of tegosept. my favorite commercial media comes from http://cgi.ebay.com/Fruit-Flies-Cul...ryZ20759QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem if you get his starter kit he will give you way more excelsizor than you need, also, his media is my favorite commercial media (odor&mold free). josh's frogs http://www.joshsfrogs.com/category/50/Fruit-Fly-Media-Media-Ingredients also has a great media, plus tegosept and other supplies, tegosept can also be found at http://www.carolina.com/?s_cid=ppc_gl_carolina&gclid=CKT88Z7b4qACFaFi4wodVluWBw regardless of where it comes from exelcizor should be boiled and dried prior to use jmo

I get me excelsior at Michael's craft store. I find it yeilds more flies due to the large surface area it offers. I have stopped using coffee filters as this is much better.

Found the tegosept and i got a pound so that worked out good. That should last me forever of making media. Now all I could use would be some deli cups. Does anyone know where to buy some like 32 oz deli cups with lids at a store? I really dont want to order bulk online ive checked and am just looking for some place that might have some.

deli-cups?

sure you can probably find 32 oz delicups at a restaurant/deli supply, but the pre-punched cloth lids will be harder to come by. ive talked the deli-counter at fred meyer into selling me a dozen, on more than one occassion, but when you can get 10 cups, with cloth lids, excelcizor, and the best media available, for about $30 shipped why bother, unless you want to make your own media and do lots of cultures, even still, your best choices of prices and supplies are probably going to be online. jmo

Im going to make my own media so itll be alot cheaper, ill have to keep an eye out for some deli cups and try and find a deli/restaurant supply place

new link

that link is no longer valid (listing ended) new link is http://cgi.ebay.com/Fruit-Flies-Cul...ryZ20759QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem plus, dont forget, there is $16 in shipping. it comes with 1 starter culture, 10 deli-cups with cloth lids, excelcizor, odor/mold free media to make 10 cultures. so if you started a new culture every two weeks, you would have enough for 5 months (6 mnths if you started every 3 weeks), assuming you prepared, stored, and innoculated them properly, and did not come down with mites (mites love ff cultures) but there are ways to prevent that. i'd get the hydei, dont even bother with the melongaster, even the smallest of neonates can readily eat hydei. the hydei take about 10 days longer to produce but they are well worth it and a lot easier to handle. you know, that plastic nest stuff in easter baskets would probably work as good as anything. jmo
