Trapped Tail - Ouch!

Miss Lily

Chameleon Enthusiast
Yesterday Lily was having a wander around the bottom of her cage (she's due to lay any day now, and yes she has two places to lay), and as she climbed back up she wanted to come out, so I opened her door and she reached for her stick. She tried to pull herself up and I realised that she had got her tail stuck in the spring lock on her door!

Had a major panic, and luckily it's the Easter Hols and my kids are home, so I yelled for my son to come and hold her while I tried to free her tail. Don't even know how she managed to get it stuck in there - she curled it round and underneath somehow! Anyway, she managed to pull it free herself (it was stuck for less than a minute).

She spent the next few minutes wandering along the back of the chair curling and uncurling her tail while holding it up high. By this time I was still panicking and trying to take photos in case I needed to post for help on here! Her poor tail is bruised but thankfully no damage done. To my relief she started using it as normal again pretty soon after.

Why does everything happen at once? As if dealing with her laying soon isn't stressful enough?! She likes to lay at the most inconvenient times - the first clutch was the day before Christmas Eve and this time I'm sure she'll lay over the Easter weekend. I just think 'Oh my God - the Vet isn't there and I'll have to call them out as an emergency if anything goes wrong!!' A stressful few days for me I think! ;)

Good to hear no dammage!

Its because she loves you :)

I've done that before as well. My male panthers tail got caught as I was closing his cage he gaped and hissed at me. When I realized what I had done, I just quickly opened the door without thinking it through. Good thing nothing bad happened to him. I think it's kind of cute that Lily is in tune with the holidays. She gives you a present right before Christmas and she hides eggs for you during Easter.

Sounds just like the time my veiled got his tail stuck. It got bruised pretty badly.

Might get a kink, hopefully it doesn't fall off, though it shouldn't. :p

Put some polysporin on it just in case.

Thanks for your concern everyone. Lily's tail is absolutely fine. She's using it as normal and just has a bruise right near the end. Luckily the skin wasn't broken, so no lasting damage. It was just a freak thing - I still don't know how she managed it! She got it curled under the lock somehow. It wasn't anything I did, she managed it all by herself and freed herself too!
