A vent about beardie forums

I have tried two! and feel like on both I am just stupid and ignorant and shouldn't have a beardie! UGH!

I ask why nobody likes the 10gal enclosure, and nobody tells me just talks down to me like I am an idiot! At least on here, when we say "don't use glass" we can say when someone asks why "Because the ventilation is poor, humidity is too high, glass diminishes the beneficial uvb rays, and can trap in heat/bacteria"

But no, on the beardie forum, they just say "we have had many babies die in those tanks"

And I ask why? did they have proper care/supplementation to begin with?"

And the answer I get is "Temps aren't right"

4 freaking words!

My temps are fine! 80 on the cool side, 90ish in the middle and 106-110 in the basking spot!

So give me a real reason, or at least more logic before you go act like im a terrible owner for not having a 20gallon enclosure!

Grr!

Anywho.... Can anyone on here please nicely explain to me why a 10gallon is bad for a 1 &1/2 to 2in beardie? Im getting nowhere on the other forums >.<

No seriously, those forums can be helpful but you will find many answers that are way off track. I tried to provide help on one of the bigger beardie forums but it only resulted in me getting warned a few time by moderators. its pretty ridiculous what some will say.

As far as a 10 gallon is concerned. I can tell you that you dont have a hot and cold side. Ive been there and done that. Its either hot and semi hot or warm and warmer. I dont believe you can pride a proper thermal gradient in a ten gallon. A 20 long is long enough to accomplish this barely.

EDIT: If your beardie is the size you mentioned. It is more than likely days to no more than a month old. Unless the breeder did minimal feedings. Anyhow if this baby is only days old, i would keep him in a ten gallon with overall ambients in the mid-high 80's, no need for a high temp basking spot and be sure to soak the dragons daily in shoulder hieght warm water.

Oh okay. I have another question then, will it kill him to be in it until he sheds for the first time, so that I can save up for his adult enclosure? Because I did as before I bought the 10gal and the people I asked said i would be fine.. But I'm flat broke, no denying it, and have enough to buy a linear UVB and that's it with food.

I care about him and they made me feel stupid :(
I'm trying, but its hard when I'm paying for school, thought I'd be okay in this tank for a short bit and now find out otherwise and get yelled at for it :(

He is very small, I have tiny hands and he is only about the size of my pinky without counting the tail.

The breeder said he was about 4-6 weeks, but is that too young to have taken him? I'm concerned bc I've been having trouble feeding him, he only will eat babyfood, but he eats it like a champ. 4cc's at least in 1 sitting.

:) i dont want to say this and it be taken far out of context. They are a hardy animal and can live in a wide variety of spaces. It will live in a 10 gallon as long as the temps are within range. To cold he wont eat or be active, to hot and he will dehydrate quickly and die. If this is temporary, i would shoot for temps in the high 80's overall.

4-6 week is to young but as long as the animal is eating good (both insects and veggies) and the new owners have the proper care guide lines. the animal should be fine.

BE SURE TO SOAK HIM ;)

I have been bathing him daily, and misting him too! I'm worried though, because he will only eat baby food. Like sweet peas and squash Gerber stuff.

He has a fat belly and poops and stuff okay, and is very active, but refuses to eat crickets! Any suggestions??
I will shoot for the 80s!

Mine LOVE baby food!!! That's weird that a baby dragon won't eat crickets, thats usually what they want most. But as long as he's eating the baby food..are the crickets maybe too big or too small for him?

He loves the sweet peas, its how i got him to have such a turn around from where he was. Its a pain and turns his poop green, but hey if he likes it and he is lively having it i'll deal with a spoiled hand fed baby until he has his first shed. :)

As far as crickets, i think they are t bit too big, but the beardie forums said they were fine, however, i am unconvinced. When he had the 1/4 crickets he ate like a champ, and then after i left for labor day, my bf ran out of the 1/4 and got small from petco (not our first choice, as we avoid petco unless the vivs there are significantly cheaper for the same brand) and those crickets were significantly bigger. Not huge but im sure enough to intimidate him.

The smalls from petsmart are the same size, and i have seen Bella eat them no problem, but she wouldnt eat the one fourth. Bella is a monster compared to my baby, she ha sto be almost 2x his size now.

Thankfully with the babyfood he is putting on weight. I just dont know what to do to get him to eat bugs. I always end up with the very picky eaters

Would size affect their appetites? The man on the beardie forum, and he said it would/wasnt that. It was that my care of him was improper.

But this man also said reptiGLO was better than reptiSUN when we all know that reptiglow does not reach the bottom of the enclosure.

Beardie forums may be helpful, but ive found that on here i get more accurate, and nicely put info, so that you guys for putting up with me and my new venture with my beardie. :)

He eats about 4mL of babyfood per feeding.

Here is what we mix into it to make it more nutricious:

1 part Orange Gatorade: 1 part calcium (no D3): 1 part Sweetpeas (green giant, only costs bout 50cents!): 1 part Squash.

Mix them together, and suck it into the syringe, its a bit watery, but it hydrates, and feeds them very well!

We wipe his face off afterwards, and today he flared his beard for the first time!!! :D

It made him look like he has no neck hahaha :)

He's a cutie, looks almost identical to one of mine. He might just still be in shock after that bad weekend a few weeks ago. As long as he's eating the babyfood and your doing all the right supplements he should be fine. Have you tried giving him a warm bath before he eats? Mine always get hungry after swimming around a shallow bath for a few minutes

Should try feeding more fresh greens veggies. With other small bugs to catch his interest if crickets are not.

Ooh no I never thought of that! I will try that next feeding!! I ordered pinheads and pheonix and horned worms (made a note that I needed tiny ones!! at mulberry farms)

Hopefully something will entice him!!

Alrighty! getting a different veggie tonight! Maybe Dandilion or mustard! With a different type of squash!

I'm hopeful now, he's getting fat lol

Im on that forum too!!! That Germ dude and.Mungis buddha are a**holes lol!! We can get better info from the people on here.rather than on there. That forum is horrible. They treat you like crap!

Good luck with him, he's a cutie!

Thank you. He's lethargic again today. I don't know what to do, I wanted to get a chameleon and should have stuck with that, I knew what to do for a sick/picky chameleon, and I am having a really hard time with Goliath. Beardies are harder than chameleons when the breeder gives you one that could have only been maybe a week old, and who wouldn't acclimate well, and won't take him back so that he can save him. I have tried callin gthe guy at least 12 times and get him to take him and give me one that is healthy bc Idk wtf to do, and his response has been "idk what to tell you, stick with the baby food and if he dies. well I'll see if i can make you a deal"

"if he dies" red flag statement! I will not go back to him. I am trying to do right by Goliath and nothing works, some days he even acts like he's dying. I can't have another reptile die bc of me. It hurts bc I can't help Goliath and his own breeder doesn't give 2****s.

Can anybody tell me if he can have baby cereal?? I don't think so but mom says its worth a shot..

They are! They don't give you advice so much as they belittle you, criticize you, and make you feel like an idiot.

Needless to say, I won't be on that forum anymore.

This one is so much better!!
