Using a maintenance diet to alter the nutrients of feeder insects.

Gryllidae Per Kcal

I’m not sure if I’ve shared this before but here’s a paper on altering the nutrient levels of feeder insects through a maintenance diet. I know Timberline uses this method with their own line of insects called Vita-Bugs. Instead of gut loading, feeder insects can be fed a maintenance diet that accumulate nutrients such as vitamin A (beta carotene), E, and omega fatty acids as they’re being raised. Some nutrients, like calcium, need to be gut loaded instead of fed as a regular maintenance diet because they’re passed through the insect’s gut instead of being stored in the muscle tissue and eyes.
