How far can chameleons see?

Whenever I start shaking the cup to dust my crickets, my chameleon will see that from far away and he will know its feeding time, and will walk down to his "feeding" branch where he gets hand fed! It's amazing how far and good eye sight he has!

I would assume they probably have much better eyesite than humans. Their survival is very dependant on sight. Lets face it most birds, mammals, and snakes could easily overpower a cham, their only real defense is their ability to hide. They have to spot their prey before it spots them, their not outrunning anything.

There's a nice article from Matthias Ott about chameleons' eyes in german, you're maybe able to translate it: http://www.spektrumverlag.de/artikel/822549. He's a biologist who wrote his dissertation about chameleons' eyes' optics. Here's another article in english: http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v373/n6516/abs/373692a0.html . Some of Ott's and Scheffel's statements: Chameleons can accomodate their lenses about 45 dioptres and they can focus things 4 times faster than humans can. And they got diverging lenses instead of convergent lenses. But that's just a little part, just see his publications for more. It's a very interesting topic.
