What's teenage phase like for veiled chameleons?

I have a veiled chameleon that's about 4-5 months old. He always hisses and is afraid of me when I put my hand into the cage for cleaning. Every time when I am around the cage, his color also turns to a little darker.

After seeing some mature veiled chameleons climbing all over their owners body and their beautiful green color, and after seeing some opinions on teenage veiled, I am just wondering if my cham will have the same temper and reaction to me throughout his life.

Can somebody describe what their chameleons were like in teenage phase? Or did your chameleons change temper/attitude after they became fully grown?

:)

Hi I have male Veiled that's around a year old. Once he got to around that age your's is and until he was around 7-9 months old approximately, he always hissed at me as well. Now he hardly ever hisses unless I get a camera around him :p. But you should remember, and I'm sure you already know this, all chams vary as far as peronalities go. And Veiled's have a reputation of being one of the grumpier species of chams, and males more than females. If you just be patient with him and try not to disturb him or be forceful when handling I'm sure he'll turn out just fine. I've also heard that hand feeding tends to gradually calm their attitudes down, but you may wish to try this once he's a little older and more use to you. Good luck :)

Thank you for your response. Now at least I have something to look forward to haha. I am not even thinking of handling him right now because it is simply impossible to get my hands near him:eek:

I know what you mean. When he was around 7 (months) he bit me . Had such a strong bite for a little guy lol.

Their jaws really do have some power! I think the trick is to let them bite you - dont move your hand/finger. That way their teeth dont cut you

i have one that in march will be a year old today the first time ever i opened his cage and he was looking at my hand so i put it in and he crawled right on my happiness was quickly changed to oh my god my cham is raping me i mean really raping me he was griped on super tight and just rubbing his area where his junk would come out all over my hand. now here is the sick part i did want to freak him out and go at him with the other hand and scare him thank god he only did this for about a minute but it felt like forever i feel violated and might need a support group lol

Haha oh man just the other day there was a thread about this similar behaviour. I responded to someone that has a cham that's "humped" a vine or piece of wood around the same time over the past 2 years. My Veiled did it a while back over a short period of time but hasn't done it since, or on me for that matter. But I think it was Laurie that said her's does it to her as well so if you need someone to talk to about this experience she'd probably be as good as anyone lol. :p
