Respitory infection cured without baytril!

Hi guys,
I've been meaning to post this for a while now 'cause this is actually from a month or so ago but here we go. Some of you may remember the female that I got a few months back that had a respitory infection when I got her. Here's the thread I posted about her https://www.chameleonforums.com/respitory-infection-brand-new-female-trying-reptaid-77327/. Needless to say the reptaid did nothing in terms of curing the respitory infection so off to the vet we went. I asked the vet if she knew of anything besides baytril that is used to treat pnemonia in reptiles that isn't as harsh on the kidneys(I'm NOT a big fan of baytril for that reason) and she perscribed me a medcation that she commonly uses with birds and some reptiles with pretty good results. It's called trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole(the brand name is called septra). It's actually used in humans quite often and because of the small dosage needed for a 30 gram chameleon it was only $12 dollars for the perscription. Well anyways, I gave her the meds mixed with 1 mL of pedialyte every day for two 10 day intervals(10 days on, two days off and then 10 more days on) and it worked great. I haven't seen any RI symptoms in over a month now and she's doing great! She has DOUBLED in size since I got her (she was 32 grams when I got her and about 6 months old and now she is 59 grams and 8 months old), she was eating normally even when she had the respitory infection though.

I just wanted to post this to let others know that there are other meds out there that work on respitory infections besides baytril and to give others hope about the dreaded respitory infection. I'm not discrediting culture sensitivities, they are the surefire way to tell what drugs will work, but if your vet doesn't run one and wants to use baytril maybe ask if he or she can perscribe this instead. I decided to name her Ury "U.R.I."( I know technically it was a L.R.I but Lury didn't sound as good) because of how she came to me. I also wanted to say thanks for all the support I got when I posted the first thread about her. Well any ways here's some some videos of when she was sick, comparison pictures and some picturs of her today.

Thanks guys!
-Alex

Her sick and coughing mucus. She coughs twice at about 25-30 seconds in the video.

That med has been around for quite sometime. I used it back on my Parson's in the 90's. Are vets still sticking with Baytril over that Tri-meth or of all things I've used Amoxycillan (sp) too.

I avoid Baytril and Amicaycin (Sp) whenever I can.

Yeah, for a lot of vets baytril is usually thier "go-to" for respitory infections in reptiles but some of the more moderen practicing vets will try to avoid baytril or use baytril in a nebulizer to directly treat the infection in the lungs and avoid kidney damage.

Baytril did nothing for my Chameleons respiratory infection. And now he has issues pooping ontop of the respiratory infection. His poops are now anywhere from One week to Two weeks apart of Baytril. His urate looks bad also, despite him drinking daily. He was lethargic after Baytril, hanging his limbs from branches. He is active now that he has had over a month off of the Baytril to recover. Still coughing but no mucus in his mouth, though there never was.

Considering that not all bacteria capable of causing respiratory infections are sensitive to Baytril, it usually makes sense to have the vet do a sensitivity test. I know by the time a cham goes to the vet it is really sick and time is important (which is one reason vets fall back on Baytril as broad spectrum), but lack of this test ruins your chance that a safer med could be tried.

i just read this thread about the new meds that cured Ury and id love to hear any advice you have about my problem. i noticed yesterday that my 2 month old baby veiled was closing one of his eyes for extended periods of time. he had just shed the day before. after talking to some people on the forum i thought it was a piece of unshed skin on his eyelid, i took him up to the emporium i got him from just in case and she said he looked like he was in great health with no signs of a URI or LRI which is what i was worried about. now today he's lethargic, hes only moved to eat or drink. when i was looking at him to see how many crickets he ate he opened his mouth, didnt hiss but i saw ALOT of bubbly, thick, clear mucus in his mouth.. im really worried and this is my first cham we've only had him 5 days and i cant bear to watch him die.. i'm taking him up to the emporium i got him from to be looked at by someone qualified, a woman from our local reptile rescue. but any kind of advice or thoughts id really appreciate im so worried he seemed fine last night, thats what i was told and now today hes not himself at all and his mouth is full of mucus....... :(

This is the best advice given in the entire thread
