Real Plants for Chameleons

What kind of LIVE plants can be put into a Chameleon Cage?

Right now my Zoey has fake plants throughout her tank, dont worry she never tries to eat them, she's been in fake plants since she was just a baby, but I would like to add some real plants into the cage for her. My Male Carmen has a real plant, but i've never seen it anywhere and I don't know what kind it is (off the branches it has a group of 8-10 leaves on the end of each branch) but yeah.

Anyone who knows what kind of plants are good for their cages, and maybe an online place to buy them?

Thanks

the forums has a plant list with many good plants and their specific requirements. https://www.chameleonforums.com/plants/ . I use pothos, Schefflera, and would like to get a ficus soon, just need to find a place to buy one. Anyone know of a good website. I looked at home depot and wal-mart but they don't carry them anymore since it is winter.

thanks for that

I didnt know there was a list like that on here, should have thought..

Thanks for it, I have to look. Have you ever tried growing any of them from seeds?

to grow them yourself you would have to start a LONG time before you get your chameleon in order to have a decent size plant in time forthem to climb it and not destroy it, you'll wanna buy. i use pothos, croton, dracaena, and orchids. alot of folk also like schleffera and hibiscus too.

I just came back from searching for a large ficus tree for my chams new cage. It was really hard to find a good one this time of year. They are usually found around Febuary. I ended up buying a 2 foot umbrella tree for $13. In order to fill in the rest of the space I placed two hanging pothos at the top. Walmart has the cheapest prices.

Also, when and if you do buy a plant, repot it and make sure you cover up the soil with screen or large rocks so the chameleon doesn't ingest any.

wow you got ripped off on that 2 foot umbrella i got one for 9 dollars it was 44" tall

Umbrella plants must be easy to grow all year round in florida. That is probably why it is cheaper over there. I was about to buy a 2 foot ficus tree at home depot for $38 because it was the only one I found. Now that is a rip off because I got my 4 foot ficus from walmart last spring for $10.

LLLreptile has them... I think they'll ship them...

Yeah, I saw that on their website. Has anyone ever order a ficus from them? It is a little smaller then I would like. By the time it grows to the size I want it to be they will be available again at home depot. Any other places to order them from?

Ficus is pretty common.. except, maybe in the winter.. lately, many says that they are unable to find one.. but any good nursery should have one.
Target, Wal-mart, and Home Depot should have one..
Try local nurseries in your place. They should carry one or two.
There are many other plants that you can put in the enclosure if ficus isn't available.

You could put something under the ficus pot if height is a concern. I am actually on a hunt for ficus and might end up at LLL Reptile later today (if they are open and Home Depot is a failure).

You can check Wal-Mart and Lowes. They have Ficus all the time. Well in Florida.

In the late summer, I potted a smallish ficus and put it next to my cham's cage, as a "just in case" I need it later this winter.... good thing I did, as one of my ficus in the cage died. Even though I'm in California indoor plants can be hard to find in the winter. This spring, I'm going to start a couple extra umbrella (schlifferia) and ficus and begin to rotate plants in and out of Butter's enclosure every couple of months.

Lol, I was thinking about doing that.

The Male has a Umbrella plant in his tank right now. I am actually going to be taking it out and planting it in a pot to have in the room. The poor plant is root bound and the Chameleon never touches the thing.
