sorry, first time on a forum, urgent, my male vieled chameleon is acting wierd and eaing dirt. also he can't get a god grip on things and falls right off them. i cant decide whether to keep him in his cage because he climbs up the screen walls and then falls once he gets to the cieling.

Can you Posta photo please?
It would also be helpful if you filled in the questionnaire in the how to ask for help thread interest health forum.
Could be missing somenutrients in its diet...may have MBD...need more information to be sure.

You might want to put towels on the bottom of the cage to give him a soft landing.

If you could move him to a smaller enclosure it would be even better.

Yes, fill out the "how to ask for help". Put some folded towels on the floor. Once you have filled it out you will probably get some good help. We have members who got some good experience and even some vets. They have helped me out alot.

He may be eating dirt because he is lacking minerals, etc. that he is trying to get from the dirt. If the dirt bits are small enough that is not much concern unless he eats so much that it will not pass through and he gets constipated or impacted if the dirt bits are larger. Make sure he eats grapes or pears. Mix his water with Pedialyte (unflavored). And make sure you are giving the right supplements and vitamins.

The weakness could be a sign of many other problems and the best thing for now if he is falling is to do what you can to keep him from climbing. If you can, pad the bottom of his cage and anything he might hit if he does fall or hang a net or towel or something across his cage right under his favorite basking spot so he falls into it. Move his water source close enough that he doesn't have to work to get water because hydration is most important in sickly critters. And either hand feed or move his feed bowl close by also, to lessen the amount he has to move around.

At this stage, a vet visit would be best and it really would help if we had more info from filling out these questions:

Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?
Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?
History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.

Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule?
Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?

Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?
Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?

Pictures are helpful

It is easy if you just copy and paste and then put your answers right in. :)

And it is all info that you will need to give to the vet whenever you take a cham to an appt.

Hope your baby starts getting better soon.
