Leeks

Ive just discovered I like Leeks, and so have decided to grow them. They appear to have a good calcium to phos ratio (Calcium: 59mg Phosphorus: 35mg roughly per leek) and might therefore make a decent item to add to my list of gutload options. Ive offered a bit to my various bugs, and most will eat it, though it may not be their favourite.

Anyone using this as part of their gutload?
Anyone know its Oxalic Acid content? (what I can find suggest its low on the list, and therefore this is a non-issue)
Anyone growing leeks have pointers for me?

In the trenches

I don't know much about using them as gut load, but I did grow a few crops in Oregon, which is not very different from the milder parts of BC.

We started them early in deep seed flats, when they were abou the thickness of a straw they were planted out into a sandy bed with deep trenches dug about 8" below grade. As they grew bigger we would fill the trenches a bit at a time to help blanch the bottom parts. They like lots of water - if they suffer drought it makes them hot and tough.

Hope that helps.

i also grow leeks and have tried feeding them to my crickets, they will take them but they prefer carrott and grapes

i dont give them a lot due to the fact that i like them :)
