Large Cage, Ideas.

WASSUP!!!, my famale veiled Kamila is getting a nice big cage here in a day or so when i finish the touchups. its 24"x36"x48" with a 24" base made outa pressure treated pine. its gonna be indoors and im getting a auto mist system soon; probably stealing the cascading aquarium plant dripper idea.

I need ideas on a good tree to go in this cage. was thinkin ficus or hibiscus. what you think? she likes to eat plants too so.... im might move her pothos over with her. but still need a primary tree.

easy maintenance, medium growth rate, all around good (MV) light sourced plant.

Schefflera Arboricola, pothos, or a Ficus would be a good choice with a mercury vapor bulb.
These plants dont need a bunch of light to grow.
They only problem is that Shefflera Arboricola and ficus are both slightly toxic.
If she is a big plant eatter I wouldnt use them.
I almost lost a hibiscus when I was using it with my mercury vapor bulb.
If you plant your cage with several plants like your supposed to, I wouldnt expect that bulb to supply enought light.
If you replaced it with a dual flourecent hood with one reptisun 5.0 and one full spectrum bulb you shouldnt have any problems.

my next cage will have linear lighting, but for comparison sake im keeping the mercury vapor bulb for this big cage.

so any other trees for (MV) indoor setup? it will be 5ft from large window.NON TOXIC (i got a plant eater)

i woke up this morning and my chamy is feasting on her pothos

I AM BUYING A TREE FOR BIG CAGE TONIGHT, SHE WILL BE IN HER NEW CAGE TONIGHT!!!

NEED A TREE!!!!!! i wanna go ficus but im afraid cuz she has been eating a lot of leaves lately and i dont wanna get her sick. help..........

If you're looking for a big plant/tree that can cope with the lighting and water in a cage, may I suggest Camellia. They can get quite big, so they'll easily fill up a cage. They have a good branch structure for climbing and sleeping in. And they have good foliage for hiding and privacy.

I have never heard them being reported as toxic, and have used them for almost two years in cages with chams that often nibble on their leaves with no problems whatsoever. In fact, we use some varieties of Camellia to make various teas, so their might even be some slight nutritional benefit to their leaves.

In the right conditions, the also flower quite beautifully.

Alongside staples like Schefflera and Ficus, the Camellia is one of my favourite enclosure plants.

Sometimes at Lowes of HD you can find shefflera that has been grown and trimmed into a tree. They work well. Hibiscus I could never get to work unless they were outside.

thanks, yeah i heard schelfflera is mildy toxic so i wanna stay away, and ficus leaf juice in the eye is bad too. but now im gonna check our that camellia.

One solution might be to provide him with romaine lettuce or some other sort of good greens on a daily basis. Hopefully that will stop him from feasting on the plants. 1 on my veiled was eating my plants to death until i started provided him with romaine. Still chomps on it occasionally but only 1x every other week.

im gonna try and get a camillia tree, and if not a ficus and hopefully i curb her plant munching with the greens.
