This may be a silly question but I've wondered this for a while. I've read that if you have a large area such as a greenhouse or a large room you can keep several chams together as long as they all have their own territory. Has anybody ever done this or think this is possible?

For instance ... if you had an area large enough to hold 12 or so large ficus trees, hibiscus plants and such do you think this would work? And if so would it be possible to keep different species together?

I would imagine that there may still be some fighting but chams would be able to get away from each other. Also it would be difficult to judge the health of your individual chams as to eating enough, drinking and I suppose passing disease to each other.

I have nowhere near enough space or $$$ to do this but I just thought it would be very cool to walk into a room filled with different chams and allow them to feel somewhat FREE !!

Any thoughts??

I've kept females of mixed and same species together in large enclosures long term with no ill effects. I know of others with very large, outdoor screen enclosures who've kept mulitple species of both sexes together for years and years (like 7 or 8+) successfully. I wouldn't put two males of the same species together though. As long as the size differences aren't so much that they would be tempted to prey on each other and they are monitored for aggression, it's not a problem. Chameleons encounter conspecifics all the time in the wild. Just gotta use some intuition in a captive environ. If you think you should seperate one, do it now instead of waiting.

I have created up some of the same thoughts as you Dave. I imagine myself in a house and connected through a series of two slider doors is a beautiful greenhouse that looks like a jungle with chameleons climbing through the branches and a little pond in the middle with beautiful koi and leaping frogs....about the time I finish my project I wake up from my dream lol. But wouldn't that be cool?

Don't forget the waterfall in the corner that makes a stream through the room with a little bridge over the stream that leads to a sitting area! Maybe there could be some nocturnal species like crested geckos too!

The only problem is how would you know when they laid eggs? You'd have babies hatching all over the place that would likely get eaten by the larger lizards!

I don't wanna wake up!! LOLOL

I have a similar dream.....in mine, my husband agrees to put double french doors on the entrance to our solarium (no doors at all now). He also lets me install lighting and heating suitable for reptiles. Than he agrees to let me remove the big round table and chairs and replace them with tall potted plants and climbing logs. There would be orchid plants hanging from the ceiling. Then I sigh, and get back to reality

It would be really awesome to have the room to make this happen. I think it would have to be one locale kept in the greenhouse as to not cross locales though. I'd love a huge greenhouse full of Mafana hehe.
