Furcifer pardalis habitat photos

I thought I would supply with some Furcifer pardalis habitat photos from my trip to Madagascar, the following pictures are all taken on the isle of Nosy Bè northwest of Madagascar. All photos are natural, and was taken as soon as the chameleons was spotted.

Furcifer pardalis is everywhere on Nosy Bè. 30 seconds after leaving the airport in a local taxi we spotted our first F.pardalis crossing the road.
On the 30 minute drive we saw 18 F.pardalis crossing the road, only males.

The next photos are taken on the walk to the national park of Lokobè Southeast of NosyBè.
To males sizing eachother.

This is typical Furcifer pardalis habitat. In cultivated open landscape.

We had no oberservations of Furcifer pardalis in old forest. Even though there was cultivated brush 50 meters outside of the dense forest, and lots of pardalis in this vegitation, we never saw F.pardalis in dense forest. Here the Brokesia sp. Calumma sp. was heavy present

Who was it a few months back here that was trying to tell me that panthers occurred more often in old growth forest where temps were cooler?
Whoever that was- I told ya so!
:p

LOL

Did you venture into any other locales? I just wondered if it was that easy to collect/photo pardalis in all the locales or if Nosey be just had an abundance of pardalis compared to other locales? Did you get to any of the islands? ( ie mitsio or faly) Just wanted to know how abundant the specimens were in those prized locations........;)

And thanks for posting the pics & giving us first hand exp on the islands herps.

Furcifer pardalis is abundant all along northwest of madagascar, but Nosy Bè had the highest population in my experience. They were also the most easy noticable due to the striking coloration of the males.
If you know what you are looking for, you will find chameleons pretty much everywere in the mid-north of madagascar. In and outside of the captial the Furcifer laterlis was as common as pidegeons in a normal european city.
I did not visit Mitsio of Faly, but will try to visit more of the smaller island in NW on my next trip.

So jealous! Very nice to see them wandering around in the wild...now I just gotta figure out how to lay some black top in Claude's house!!:eek:;)

Based on your exp then we don't need to fear over collection oof wc pardalis. At least in nosey be areas. I am glad to hear that.

Thanks for the info and pics.

Its not a Furcifer pardalis, but still a photo I am pleased with of a beautiful Calumma nastum.
This was also a fairly common species wich I encountered several times.

That is amazing that they were found in such abundance. Is it me or are there actually two males in that second photo ?
Any theories as to why no females were found ? I am sure their llife span must not be that long in the wild. Could the timing of your visit (season) play some part ?
