How were you housing them when they became cacoons? And what conditions were they held at before hatching. The reason I ask is that I may want to try this.

For good results take full grown HWs that are starting to get the white stripe down their back and put them near dirt. So maybe use a small cage or a tub that the worm won't try to leave. The worm will make its way to the dirt and burrow down and cocoon. Once they cocoon you can take the cocoons out of the dirt and store them. I am not sure on the amount of time before they become moths, but they will need space when they hatch out to spread their wings.

just put them in a container with soil because they dig about 5-9 inches before they spend 10 days in isolation and go through metamorphisys. i keep the container outside....its about 30 degrees celcius in toronto canada.

Awesome, thanks. I have about 15 of those big boys left and Pete is the only one eating them, and he can only eat so many. Actually he probably would eat them all in one sitting, or at least try -- he's a piggie.
