can i make the food a substrate?

i was wondering what to use as a substrate for my crickets. and i dont know if i should use their cricket chow as a substrate or not use it at all idk. help please on how to set up a cage for them.

crickets do not require a substrate.
You'll find their container easier to clean if you leave the bottom bare and put food in shallow "dishes" or to one side of the container
