where should the heat lamp be?

How far from the nearest vine should Irwins heat lamp be? It has a 100 watt bulb in it now. I just don't want him to get burned. He is always a dark color with blue stripes, is this because he is not warm enough? He has a 5.0 and a 2.0 uvb bulb in there now. Is this ok for a veiled?

Put a temp gauge in there in his basking spot, move the bulb away from the cage or toward it until yu reach your desired temperature.... if you cant get it just right go down a bulb size or up and try again...

You should be sure to keep the bulb at least 5 or 6 inches from the top of your chameleon's head to prevent burns. If you can't get the temperature high enough with this distance, you may need a higher watt bulb. Be sure that you are measuring your temps with a digital thermometer with a probe or a temperature gun. The stick on thermometers just aren't reliable enough ;)

And as a sanity check, stick your hand right where he will bask and, if after holding it there for a minute, if it feels too hot, it probably is too hot.
