Can anyone tell me if any regular tap water conditioner is okay to treat my chams water or if I need to buy a specific one?

The answer to this VERY common question is...it depends on what's in your water. If you are on your own well and you don't treat your water with chemicals, you don't need anything. If you are on municipal water, find out if they add chlorine, fluoride, or chloramines as treatment chemicals. If they use chlorine, all you would really need to do is leave the water in an open bucket overnight so the chlorine can dissipate on its own. If they use chloramines, you would want to use a water conditioner such as one for reptiles. I don't know about fluoride additives or whether they are a risk to herps.
If you decide to use bottled water (so called spring or filtered water) instead, check the ingredients...bottled water differs a lot depending on where it is taken from. It isn't necessarily better.
You don't need to use distilled water. If your water is hard you'll see mineral deposits on plant leaves and in mister nozzles eventually. Not a big problem and you can get rid of mineral build up with plain vinegar.

thanks for the info! Would the reptile conditioner be the same as the "turtle water conditioner"? I've looked around for Reptisafe and can't seem to find it anywhere around here...

The conditioner label should tell you what it removes and what it adds. It would probably say something like "removes chlorine, chloramine, neutralizes ammonia or nitrogen" etc. Don't know, this was just a guess.

that would be fantastic Cait, because I also own a betta so I have the tap water conditioner on hand!
