Is there any evidence that this is indeed how multiple clutches occur in egg-laying species? I'm wondering if it's not possible that the clutches after the first could be fertilized at the same time, but egg formation delayed somehow. Maybe fertilized ova could be stored, rather than sperm? What got me thinking about this was that I've heard embryos at different stages of development have been found in the live bearing species.
