Staple Food ideas

Up until recently, I used to feed my Jackson's Chameleon (Thakoor) Crickets, Dubia Roaches, and Hornworms as staples. All 3 are available locally for me. I would order Silkies online once every month or 2 and feed them on ocassion.

Now the issue I am running into is that my Jacksons' doesn't seem to be interested in Dubia Roaches anymore. Which is really sad because they are available at the reptile specialty shop close to me, they are easy to keep, and aren't as messy as crickets.

I am wondering if folks could give me some ideas of what other feeders I could look into as staples for a Jackson Chameleon. I'd love to have silkies as a staple but I usually have to order them online and deal with keep them sterile and feed them the chow etc etc. which is almost a part time job!

Any other feeder ideas that you guys would recommend?

My Jackson goes crazy for butterworms and phoenix worms, which are both easy to deal with and fairly nutritious.

Cool Jackson's chameleon by the way. I love the color of his horns!

Will check out both Butterworms and Phoenix worms. Quick question, do they smell much? I like feeding Hornworms to my Cham because they don't smell at all.

Thanks for the complement. He's much more prettier in person but when i pull the camera out, the tail curls up and he turns darker.

Try other roaches such as banana roaches or mantids!

I have heard that compared to Dubias, other roaches are great escape artists. So stayed away from them mainly. My local store does carry hissers though.

Will look into Mantids. Thanks for the heads up.

Butterworms have a strange fruity smell, it is not unpleasant.

The Phoenix worms I got had no smell and are extremely high in calcium.

Sounds like you have a pretty sweet local store... I wish there was a place in Cincinnati that sold more than crickets and mealworms. Shipping costs for feeders are breaking the bank!

Yeah, its a decent store. They are a specialty store, so they carry feeder insects and frozen rats/mice etc. for snake keepers.

Shipping costs is one of the reasons that ordering online isn't my favorite.

Everyone who I have spoke to has said Jacksons love flies. I am just waiting for my male to get a bit bigger then I can try him on some house flies.

Didn't know that. Do you have any ideas which online stores sell them?

I started breeding my own terrestrial isopods and snails using local wild ones as initial stock. But you can buy them online from a few vendors.
here's a couple options: http://www.nilesbio.com/prod95.html
