Mellers?

How can I tell the difference between a male and female mellers chameleon? I saw one in a petstore owned by a chameleon breeder so it was in proper set up and had correct lights and a mister, but the owner wasn't there and the employees didn't know how to determine the sex.

And don't fall for the "if they have a black spot behind their ears" either. I've heard alot of bologny, but there is NO way of telling, short of mating or eggs. I did hear that if you own one and it's constantly searching the house, only if free-roaming, then you probably have a male, looking for a female. But that's probably an old wives tale too. But they are awesome chams either sex. I've had a few and never knew any of the sexes.

The odds that you saw what you were told you saw are very small.

Mellers are not bred very often. I think it a very small chance indeed that a breeder would sell them to a pet store. Either they would not want to pay his price because it would not be easy for them to markup and sell (most petstores have a 2 to 2.5 x markup on their reptiles= very expensive the chameleon your price), or he would think the animals too precious to toss to a pet shop...

Be careful about any advice they give you...

Not saying it's impossible, just very very unlikely...

I have bred these guys- have babies right now https://www.chameleonforums.com/hatched-12-19-a-36267/. To date, no one has come up with a way to really sex them on sight. I think I have worked out a way to sex some of my hatchlings- maaaaybe. I won't know until I sell some and people report back to me in a couple of years if I was right or wrong...

I am dieing to hear what you have come up with as far as sexing hatchlings. Unless you are running DNA...

No- I'm just applying stuff I've learned with chams and lizards in general. So right off the bat it's not going to be 100%. But I hope to hit pretty high percentages. I'm not going to give it away until we find out if I'm right or wrong. Too many speculations become fact magically after being passed around on the internet. But I am planning on making a game out of it. I'll be selling my babies in a couple of months, and I will take requests if someone wants me to try for particular sexes, with the understanding that I may be right, but I might be wrong. We'll keep score as we find out how I did- maybe here on the forums would be a fun place. After a couple of years we should know how I did and I'll reveal at that time if I was right or wrong and what I was thinking so others can repeat it if I'm right or we can add it to the list of things that didn't work to sex them if I'm wrong...

I hope I do significantly better than that.

LOL

I'm hoping I can at least hit 70% or we could attribute it to dumb luck.

We shall see...

:)

All of my melleri that I have "sexed", I was always wrong. So now, I just go with the opposite of what I initially think.

Although I was dead on with the male I recently picked out for one of my females and they bred right away so I didn't have to wait to find out. :p
