Live plant soil coverage

Is there any reason or what would be the best way to cover the soil of the live plants? I have read in some forums here that some chams are ok eating dirt and some are not so I was wondering if anyone covered the dirt with something and if so what?

The soil should be fertilizer and pesticide free. I cover up the soil in my plants with screen. I cover it all and secure it down. Others use mesh or large rocks that the chameleons can't eat to cover the soil up. Some chameleons do eat soil sometimes but you should be careful because it can cause impaction.

I use river rocks in mine, no cham in the tank yet, but this way he cant pick up dirt, but the crix can hide behind rocks, so it sucks.
