Foggers and Waterfalls

alright so obviously everyone wants a sick looking set up for their cham, but how acceptable are these? i want to get the zoo med repti fogger (exo terra's heats up and zoo med is external) and maybe a waterfall i know i have to really clean the waterfall when it comes down to it, so my question is are these to suitable for a veiled chameleon, I'm mostly looking for an answer on the fogger, cause im not sure if this will put humidity up too high

You really don't need a fogger. And the waterfall is a bacteria trap with moving water. Poop and crix are all your going to deal with on a daily. basis. You can waste money on these but for what your going to spend on these two useless items you can buy a starter mistking setup. Your cham will love it and you wont have to hand mist all the time. Im saving up for the ultimate mistking right now.

I fell victim to the Fogger and Waterfall's allure when I first started. But the lesson learned was both were an incredible waste of money; especially if you've got hard water, like we do in Calgary. The waterfall was like a fancy toilet for my chameleon, he ONLY pooped in it and nowhere else. And of course, crickets died and eventually the pump died because of the calcium build up from the water.

The ultrasonic fogger is also neat, but the membrane thing did not react well with the water in my city. They may be cheaper now, but i remember it being a $40 cost to replace the membrane, and for the month or so it lasted, it is hardly worth it. That combined with the 2 inches of water that eventually accumulated in the bottom of his enclosure, made it a very un-reasonable thing to use.

Definitely go with a mister, as Texas Panther Man recommended :)

Dont use either everyone always thinks it will be ok and then respritory infection or many other problems that can come up. If you are worried about the humidity just go to walmart and get a cold mist humidifier and you will be fine. I would stick with just misting or getting osmething to do it for you

the fogger has been great for me, I need that and misting to keep the humidity up. I use machines by me that fill up gallon jugs with drinking water for 35 cents, that way I avoid using bad tap that we have.

but i have to keep my cage at least 70% RH, for a veiled it probably would be useless. even if you do need it, I know it probably is better to just get a humidifer, but i was too lazy to get one of those bulky things and customize it for a reptile cage.

foggers aren't really a good idea.... and waterfalls are a def. NO.

To me a "sick setup" has a Mist King misting system, well trimmed ficus or scheflera, proper lighting and a good amount of vines and sticks to climb on.

waterfalls, goofy colored lights, fog and bug shakers don't fit the bill in my book.

I have to say, I'm becoming a fan of the foggers. It helps keep the cage cool and keeps a nice little area of moisture for those montane species with high humid. requirements.
I had a baby Nosy Be given to me with a crusted over right eye. After 4 or 5 days of a fogger placed by his basking spot, he was able to free his eye of gunk, and happy to report doing much better. He was much to small for me to attemp manual remove.

I want to get the mist king one day, can you keep high humidity with it? it would be nice to be able to use it to replace everything else I use. My cham definetly looks unhappy when the humidity is at 60% or less.

I guess they do have their place... but they aren't something to use for the 'bling' effect. :D

i mist heavily in the morning and evening, and i have a humidifier next to his cage, its a cool mist system so its not piping hot and he loves it, i can get the humidity up to 95% and as the other guys said, the fogger is ok, but not a waterfall, those are for like dart frogs and water dragons.

I stopped using my fogger. I didn't think it was doing anything constructive but soaking the bottom of my cage..

In my opinion, neither is necessary or even worthwhile.
A dripper and either a hand mister or auto mister is all you likely need. What type of chameleon is it you are housing, and what type of cage and environment are you working with?

I bought a Promist when I first started. In the room with the larger chameleons, I use the Promist and occasional spraying. In the second room with the younger chameleons, I spray the cages completely with a pump home sprayer at least twice a day. Chameleons in both rooms are doing great. I have never used a fogger or waterfall due to the bacteria issue.

One thing to remember about fogger and ultrasonic humidifiers...... If you are using hard water, you are going to ruin your humidifier. I went through my two humidifiers preeeetttttty fast with the hard water I have at my place. I recommend you use distilled water or RO water.

Also remember you need to clean out your humidifier frequently to to prevent mold and hard water stains from forming.

If you use the right connection and attach the fogger to some PVC pipe with the other end blocked and drill some holes in the pipe, about 3 - 4 and place that on top of the cage, the fog then falls out of the holes into the enclosure, the quads love it, it looks great and stays that way as it is on.
