i ordered a chameleon from scremeleons and it had a RI so i sent it back yesterday and they seem to have lost the package with the chameleon in it they said the package never even left california...and they dont know were the pakage is...:(man im soooooo pissed...

Years ago, when I had a Jackson X., I ordered a female from a guy in Texas and the Fed Ex driver tossed the box over the gate, even though it said outside the box "Live Animal". So I got home to see a note to tell me a package was waiting for me behind my gate. Opened the box just to find a dead cham. So I called the local Fed Ex office and the breeder in Texas, so I got another cham two days later, but she died the same evening...so no more ordering live animals online for me...

Fed Ex does not accept live animals except under special circumstances.

From the Fed Ex site:
FedEx Express does not accept live-animal shipments as part of its regular-scheduled service and does not transport household pets such as dogs, cats, birds and hamsters. FedEx Express may accept certain shipments of live animals such as horses, livestock and zoo animals (to and from zoo locations only) on an exception basis if approved and coordinated by the FedEx Live Animal Desk (call 1.800.405.9052).

If approved by FedEx, we may accept non-venomous reptiles, amphibians, live/tropical fish and beneficial insects on an exception basis under the following conditions:

Shipments must be from a business to a business (from a breeder to a pet store, for example).

The shipper must have its packaging tested and pre-approved by FedEx Packaging Design and Development for the type of animal being shipped. Call 1.800.633.7019 for assistance. It is the responsibility of the shipper to adequately package shipments for all temperature extremes and handling conditions.

Using Fed Ex for live animals is inherently risky simply because it's not what they do. UPS is really the shipper of choice for live animals.

I'm not saying you don't have a right to be upset, but I do think it's a bit disingenuous to hate them for failing to do something they said the don't do.

Whether it's right to hate them or not, that totally sucks, and I would be pretty pissed as well. Sorry about the terrible situation :(

I agree, I am new to chams and have been browsing arounf the net all day for one. I have wanted one for a long time. Im going to spend the next week putting together a home for him and then buy one... Looks like i'll try to stay local...

UPS generally is very good with their shipments. I personally like to try to stay local because I'm a cheapy. Shipping is expensive and I could be using that money on more important things, like my vet fund.

MK1 where are you located, maybe we can find you a local breeder.

yeah no more chams from on line...oh yah i never said i hated them im just a little pissed becouse they lost my package and if its not found idk how long its gonna take to get another one or my money...:(...but im sure it should get to one of the addresses on the package and its priority over night shipping...but yah poor little cham...:(oh yah and when the fedex guy got to my house when i first got it he tossed it and flipped it in the air...wat an ass...

hay pssh u think u can help me find a local breeder?im in california too...

UPS accepts live shipments. That means they have to live up to the issues involved with that or pay for any losses. That, right there, is why UPS should be the shipper of choice.

Forgive me for thinking "Fed Ex SUCKS" didn't equal hate....I guess I'm just old.

I will say that if you have proof of shipment from Fed Ex (which means the original scan) and tracking info that says your package did not get back to the breeder, the breeder should accept that as a return. If they do not...well...protest the heck out of that!

oh yah and when the fedex guy got to my house when i first got it he tossed it and flipped it in the air...wat an ass...

thats messed up man, just messed up.

one time the FedEx guy was LATE on his route...so he scanned the box as delivered several hours before he actually delivered it(when it was totally dark outside!). My online tracking said it was delivered...

For several hours, I thought somebody stole my box. I was halfway done with completing an online claim form, when he finally happened to dropped it off.

The two times I have had animals shipped to me they were through UPS. Both times the experience was smooth.

People need to remember that you sort of need to 'play the system' as in... don't have an animal dropped off at your door, it means more hands on the package and more time the aninmal is in the box. The best option is to drive to a major hub. Have the breeder or store or person ship to the major distro/hub closest to you. The package will arive early and most likely only be handled by a couple of people. Packages being delivered by a UPS guy to your home means the package will get tossed around, most likely go through the entire conveyor system (MILES of conveyors in a UPS hub) and has the chance of being smashed , kicked, smacked, dropped, stepped on, left in cold/hot weather conditions, ect.

Be smart when shipping.... learn the system.

Both times I had chams shipped to me I got a call at 7am local time from the UPS hub saying 'please remember you have a live animal here at the hub ready for pickup'. Both times the same UPS employee handled my package with great care. She even kept the package in a quiet temp regulated room apart from the busy business of the building. OH and like a good motherly sort of person... she reminded me of when she called and that I should come sooner if I can, because it is a live animal after all (I came by around 11am during an early lunch).

From what I am swing on the map, you are very close to Pomona and LA. I think it would be a good idea to drive to one of the super shows and pick one up there. The best selection is in the morning of the first day when the animals are also the least stressed. The show in january is going to have amazing blue reptiles, kammerflage creations, LLL, and others. You should be able to find a nice, quality chameleon (especially a panther.)

Wow that sucks!!! However, Vincent is a stand up guy with some of the best panthers in the business. It was probably a freak thing. I am sure you will get to the bottom of it. I send and receive chameleons all over the country and have only had 1 issue with UPS. I have never used FedEx, so I don't know about how well they operate, but hopefully he paid for insurance.

That is a completely inaccurate statement. UPS allows you to ship but with no guarantee just like FedEx. The have the same policy but UPS has no certification and lets anyone who feels like it ship animals through them.

FedEx requires you to go through a certification process to ship animals. UPS does not and leaves it up to you to try and follow some guidelines. FedEx spells them out and tests you.

They both offer no guarantee.

The reason most do not ship with FedEx is because they are not allowed to and have not taken the time to get certified.

It just goes to reason that if you are violating the terms of use for a company (and even if you have a certificate from Fed Ex, it does not cover shipping to a private residence) you will be unable to make any claims. However, if you have followed the rules and the package is lost (something that has nothing to do with the "perishable" nature of the animal) UPS has a standard guarantee.
