For the crickets, go with a large plastic bin with smooth, slippery sides. Throw your gut load and some egg cartons in and your set. Keep things dry and don't let anything mold. This will only cost a few bucks and will be easier to move, clean, or dispose of that glass.
As for the gender, the males have spurs on their back legs, but I'm not a veiled expert and don't have any pictures so someone else could be of more help. If you do a search, you should find whatever you need to know in older threads.
