i just got my first veiled cham..he's about 4 months old. he's always an earthy tone like a brown until i hold him then he turns lime green (hints the name kiwi). sometimes if my hand is close to him he turns kind of spotted like a leopard. is all this normal? also i keep hearing i shouldnt handle him much. any suggestions? thanks!

He is "firing up" it is a reaction towards emotions. Chameleons do not change colors of the enviroment. They change color due to emotions. Its way normal:D also "brown" might be stress related. whats the temps, lighting. cage type.. also I have learned chams need a few weeks because relocation stress is a major factor.

yeah give him a week or so and he should get better. Hope you have fun with your new cham!

Chams change color for many reasons, stress, cold, warm, happy, angry or anything else. Make sure your temps. are ok. You shouldn't handle chams that much, because the get stressed really easy, you should only handle your cham for cleaning or taking them outside to get sun, those are the only times or like me my cham doesn't like anything at all so it is very hard to get her out of the cage. Hope this helps.:)

God I hate my computer. I go into a thread and it doesn't show any posts, but when I post something all the other posts show up.

Congrats on your new chameleon and welcome to the Chameleon Forums.

Veileds go through a brown stage. My little Luie did at about that age. Sometimes they hate being in a cage. Try buying a big tree and when you are around to supervise allow him to hang in his tree and see if he will color up. Jann

his temp is at a steady 80 degrees. i have a reg light in there cuz the lady said as long as i feed him crickets with the calcium supplement he wont need uv. is that dumb?

I thought one of the reasons why they get brown is to try to warm up. Yes, you deff need uvb( not a coil bulb) lighting with a regular house bulb on the other side to regulate temps...85 on hot side 80-75 on cool side. You already have uv with the regular light. But UVB is deff needed! Suppliments are also needed but in certain times of the week. look around for threads on that subject. You will get this solved with time and this website..I have learned alot!!

Hands, did you mean 95 in the basking side? This guy is old enough and should be under 95 degree basking lights.

Your current temps are for sure one of the reasons he is brown.

Dust with Phosphorous free calcium powder ever 5-6 times a week. Dust with phos free calcium powder with D3 2-3 times a month, and a vitamin supplement like minerall 1-2 times a month.

If you don't have one, get a digital thermometer, they aren't expensive. You can find them at LLL (site sponsor) combined with a humidity gage for less than 20 bucks. Analog thermometers aren't very accurate and can be off by more than 5 degrees.

you mean dustin his food right? how often should i be feeding him. i've been hearing a lot of different things.

LOL Yeah dust his food.

It kind of depends on the cham. At his age feed him 5-6 times a week with skipped days spread out. If he starts looking a lil pudgy cut back to feeding him only every other day. This will be the recommended amount for an adult. By pudgy I mean, arms start looking like baby thighs.
