Cage Designing

is there any software out there that allows for designing a cage? or do you geniuses just do it freehand?

A CAD tool is what you are looking for. I know its a learning curve for sure but it will give all of the parametric designs options you could ever want and also leave you with a bill of materials and parts list as well. If you took some tutorials you could even get more advanced with it and do some very light stress test analysis just to see where your weak points would be. Unfortunately they are fairly expensive of course.

Pro/Engineer (now called Creo)

Solidworks (a bit easier to use)

I use google sketchup 7 for most of my stuff. easy to use and free.
