Bacteria Question

So I am about to buy Nigel's new cage from DIY the tallest one...but I am also going to grow orchids with semi hydroplonics(not as complicated as it sounds). I know the major problem with moss is the bacteria problem however, I also want to make it as realistic as possible, so most orchids are epiphytic(they grow on trees) so if I could mount some it would be perfect. I wanted to know your thoughts on these for mounting?

my orchids never did good in chameleons setups unless you are using t5s or something. Ill grow orchids and when in flower I rotate them through out the cages.

As for bacteria, just make sure you spot clean daily.

I have lighting picked out that will work perfect for the orchids...my main concern is I would like to mount some without moss onto some branches I will be using and I want to use the best safest item for the job.

What lighting are you using and what kind of chameleon and size cage. Im just curious to get an idea what you have going on. I can't help you on mounting them but I have orchids grow on top of orchids running high output t5s and metal halides. I don't see orchids doing well with any subpar lighting. They live for some time in cages but in no means do they could they thrive in most chameleons habitat of the larger species in 48 inch tall cages.

moss really isn't much to be concerned about, I wouldn't be .

this is the direction I'm heading in. well if moss would not be such a huge problem then why couldn't I make my boy's cages look just like a dart frog terrarium?

You could in theory, but moss needs really high humidity (usually best achieved in a glass cage) where as yours needs more dryness and more ventilation. They just wouldn't do well together. You could look into different species of moss, because I don't know enough about them to tell you that none could work, but this is what I've heard from people. It's tough to keep moss bright green in a chameleon cage.

Others will say don't do it because it's an impaction risk if ingested, but that sounds like over-worrying to me. It's a plant, after all. We stuff our cages full of plants and then think they'll get impacted on some moss but not some ficus? Hmm, I agree, not something I worry about either.

My other concern is if there is moss in the cage could it effect their eyes? I mean because there would be more bacteria?

from what i understand you have to get 1 out of 2 different types of orchids any other species will die but mine died your only supposed to water them every other day let the roots dry out and then water them and if you put them in tree bark cover it with river stones but your supposed to keep them in a mix or charcoal and gravel

found some pics of mounting
