Can you freeze, dry, or in someway store mulberry leaves for the long term? Mulberry trees are ubiquitous weeds here, and I want to keep silkies without necessarily buying mulberry food.
Thx,
Tyg
With great sadness I must report the death of Shayna Maideleh. She is sadly missed. The wound in her side was awful, and despite veterinary care, and desperate measures, she was unable to move normally. I made the decision to euthanise her when she would only drink from my hand -- literally...
She's primarily black and turquoise right now, but goes back to her solid green. Any progress made on her hindleg, flank/leg grabbing, has been undone and I'm again fearing for the worst. We'll rebandage her flank with tegaderm today.
For the first time ever, Mort was offered a vine to leave his cage, and he did NOT take me up on the offer, so I had to wrestle him out. Two mouth butts and a major hissy fit later I got him out and into his cooler, Shayna out and into HER cooler, and both coolers into the car.
Her follow up...
I have ongoing problems with my F veiled, and I'm reading more and more, and still learning things. From another thread I read this, which was news to me and vaguely heartening:
This is the first time I've heard anyone mention the rounded shape. I've been fretting because my F is rotund...
Laying bin set up: branch access to a Rubbermaid bin planted with a philodendron.
substrate: sand/sterile soil mix, moistened well
halogen desk lamp for heat
deli cup of phoenix worms
and here is her attitude (sans the gaping and hissing that started) when she saw Mort
It took about 2 weeks, but Mort has decided he doesn't need to be terrified. It started a few days ago when I covered the cages so that the chams wouldn't be stressed by 6 hours of massive cleaning in the room. Mort cruised his cage, and when I finally peeled back the covers, he hung out and...
My sister had the great good fortune to be teaching a 2 week class in South Africa (courtesy of the Rotarians!). After the class she took a 3 day safari at Mosetlha Bush Camp, and I asked her to find me a cham.
She did!!
Submitted for your approval,

In the 'front room' where two birds and two reptiles cohabitate (with privacy screens for the faint of heart of all involved) I have nearly a dozen plants ranging from ferns to ficus, pothos to philodendron most with water in their catch trays; a soaked towel on the lowheat oil radiator; catch...
I feel silly just typing that.
Shayna eats primarily crickets with some Phoenix worms. Her poo is pretty hard and solid, very dark, with a fairly solid white urate. I've considered this normal.
Mort eats primarily superworms so far (with occasional crickets). His poo is moist, soft...
He is sooo different from Shayna Maideleh. Mort has moved in, and he has shown me all the grace and strength of a healthy chameleon. He is to be Shayna's role model, except of course there is a modesty screen between them.
Adult male veiled chameleon.
She is all leaf, and he is 100%...
Shayna has gotten me worried enough to move her to a bucket of sand, a branch, and some fake leaves for cover.
Now I feel like I put her in prison, or such a weird environment that she's paralysed with fear. Maybe its not her, maybe its just me.
If she is a first time layer at this point...
I want to shower Shayna, but can't imagine removing her live plant to put in the shower. I have smallish potted plants outside, but that would be a small unfamiliar plant in a weird white ceramic world.
I also have an old T-stand, a piece of a broomstick crosswise on a vertical pole...
I looked in on my veiled, and THINK I saw her with some very interesting dark marks (okay...insert Harry Potter joke here) on her side...two lateral stripes. I'm seeing vague sort of dots, nothing to write home about. By the time I had gotten across the room to her she had faded to solid green...
But here is one of my first vids of Shayna...

Things to note: Her flanks are white because she scrapes them with her hind legs. Its happening less often, but she still has some evidence of it...
I need someone from the Nashville area who can get me a clip of the Predators on THIS THURSDAY. I need a video of the national anthem as sung by MY SISTER! Can you, or do you know someone, who can do this? :D
I raised the enclosure up onto an inexpensive wire rack. It will drain through to a tray on the table beneath it. Around the cage on two sides I've draped a mottled brown/green/beige print cloth to keep the birds from worrying the cham.
On the top rack I put the lights, dripper and...
