In the wild almost a quarter of a panther chameleons diet are beetles. If you dust them prior to feeding I don’t see why it couldn’t be a staple. I plan to add darkling beetles to the mix of insects I feed.
I open from the bottom. I have a grasshopper colony right now and I know what you’re saying, so I feed from opening the bottom hatch. Also, where did you order your grasshoppers from? I ordered some from eBay, but I’m pretty sure they’re wild caught so I’m using them as breeders to see if I...
Apologies on my late reply I took a break from forums for a bit. I’m glad my thread had some activity.
I did do some cutting and trimming. All sides were sealed with mod podge and painted with nontoxic paint. I then did another layer mod podge and attached coco choir to it.
In the two...

I tried the mixed greens and I wasted more than they ate. My grasshoppers preferred eating from the plants rather than a salad. I would get lettuce and have it in a shallow cup with water which kept the lettuce from drying out. They also like bunched collard greens which I also place in a cup...
1 year old Panther chameleon laid her first clutch of infertile eggs yesterday 9/24. A total of 43 eggs. First pic shows her when I found her digging early morning and second pic is of the eggs laid with a dime next to them for size comparison. Just wanted to get your thoughts on egg count and...
Too bad I’m in Upstate New York. Our local hoppers need a cold diapause. I’ve caught many red legged and they are breeding like crazy. What would you recommend for the diapause temp and length? I wonder if 4 weeks at 32F would be low and long enough. Not sure if they will require a hard freeze.
If I were you I would invest in a colony of discoids . You said 50 discoids are about $120. Depending on the size you buy them at you can have babies within 8 weeks and enough to start feeding within 6 months. And they will keep breeding. I bought 50 XL a year ago and now I have three colonies...
I’m on the east coast (upstate ny) and I’m currently breeding red legged grasshoppers. I caught about 100 nymphs in the spring and they are now breeding and laying eggs. Next step is getting the eggs to hatch. This east coast variety is smaller than other regional varieties because they have a...
Madcham has some good info on wild populations in Madagascar and what they eat.

There are several diagrams such as this one that were very helpful to me when choosing my staple foods.
Seeing flies were a big part of their diet, I buy blue bottle...
Been seeing people post about feeding grasshoppers so I decided to try them out. I wonder how easy they are to breed. They are already feeding like crazy on my homemade feeder gutload. Depending on how these survive I’m thinking about catching local hoppers and breeding them. I live in...
