My Wish for 2011!!! Do Your Research first!!!

This is my first blog and a bit of rant acutally. I have been a member of this forum for about 9 months now and have seen alot of sad things on this forum in regards to incorrect husbandry which has either made the chameleon sick or in some severe cases caused its death. It is never done deliberately, but more so from the ill advice that the owner recieved from where the chameleon was purchased(most often pet shops). As we try not to judge the owner because we are here to help, it is sometimes very hard to not be harsh and ask the question "Why did you not do your research first"! Just about everyone has a computer or access to one. The way I see it, if you can afford to buy a chamleon and all that goes with it, then most likely you are not poverty stricken and own a computer. I myself, researched Chamelons for about three months before buying one, and I still was a nervous wreck about doing everything correctly. I would just like to see less people on here looking for help for a dying or sick chameleon "because OMG I didn't know" Do your research first people!!!! The forum will love you for it and more importantly so will your chameleon! That is my wish for 2011!!!!

I know exactly how you feel. I did a few months research first too, and asked loads of questions (I even took a list of things to ask to the reptile shop). The amount of care and the need to get things right seemed very daunting. So much so, that I nearly didn't get my dear Lily. It was my Mum that persuaded me that I would be fine - she had total confidence in me, as did the shop owners.

I am SO glad that I went ahead and got Lily - she taught me so much and even helped me overcome my fear of crickets and locusts. I have never ONCE regretted getting a chameleon. I loved her so much and was compeltely devastated when she died. I couldn't be without chameleons now, I just feel I have a connection with them somehow.

I hear you on this!
Brad wants to have a resource specifically for new owners. Im hoping that will go some way to helping people get things right.

I got my first panther in September. I did all my homework first before the purchase and set up. It's gotten to the point where I can't even read the posts in the husbandry forum because I get sad and/or angry reading of health issues, problems and dying chameleons. So I totally get your point.

I could not disagree one bit. In my opinion... the research never stops. Its good to make sure you learn as much as you can before purchasing one but also keep researching afterwards and try to learn from observation and experience. I am lucky to have stumbled upon such a great Forum with great people who are willing to help. It makes me even happier to see people who actually listen to the help they receive. Great blog Carol.

Very well put!! I can read the pain and frustration. I do wish more people would learn first rather then react to in impulse. Working with animal rescue for over 20 years I too find it heartbreaking when pets are put into bad situations. They didn't' ask to be born and if captive they are dependent on us to provide what is needed for them.
